6.4 Stille Wasser sind tief

Hallo allerseits!

Zum Aufwärmen machen wir unseren Tagesminiplausch und eine Wiederholung.

Wiederholung

In the previous lesson, you learned about protein-rich foods. Let’s review what you have learned.

Jetzt bist du dran!

You’ve been asked to attend a Grillparty. Everyone needs to bring something for the barbeque. What will you bring? Write your top protein choice in your written journal.

Lektionsüberblick

Stille Wasser sind tief (still waters are deep) and stilles Wasser is something you want to order at a restaurant, if you do not like carbonated water. If you want something flavored, then keep reading! In this lesson, you will be introduced to different kinds of beverages typically consumed in the US (and Germany). In the end, you will be able to 1) recognize words for beverages among other food words, 2) name at least two beverages you drink, and 3) name at least one beverage you do not drink.

1) die Getränke (Beverages)

We need something to wash down all of the fruit, veggies, and protein we’ve been focusing on. Let’s talk beverages. There are many cognates, so this might feel a little easier.

Let’s practice.

🎥 You can watch this video and read along as Adan answers whether he needs coffee. Can you tell what his answer is?

Kleiner Hinweis

Unlike the U.S., restaurants in German-speaking countries do not automatically provide customers with a glass of water. It can be frowned upon when one does not order a beverage and just asks for a glass of tap water (Leitungswasser ). More often than not, customers will receive bottled, non-sparkling mineral water when ordering “Wasser,” for which they will have to pay.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Which drinks are easy for you to identify and remember? Start with those and write them in your written journal now. Listen again to how the words you wrote down sound. Practice saying them aloud now in your audio journal.

2) Ich trinke gern…

There is no end to the type of beverages we have access to nowadays. Was trinkst du gern? What type of drinks do you think the man below drinks?

Der Mann sagt, “Ich trinke gern Cola, Kaffee, Tee, und viele Energy-Drinks!

Here are some other responses.

Ich trinke gern Wasser und schwarzen Tee.

Ich trinke gern Rotwein.

Ich trinke gern Hefeweizen.

Let’s practice.

Jetzt bist du dran!

You are on a date or on an outing with a friend. They ask, Was trinkst du gern? How do you respond? You can respond with a simple answer or a complete sentence like those above.
Then record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

3) Ich trinke kein…

Trinkst du Kaffee oder Cola? Ja oder nein? What about the character below?

Some other examples:

Ich trinke keinen Tee oder Kaffee, nur Wasser.

Ich trinke kein Bier. Ich habe eine Allergie gegen Alkohol.

Ich trinke keinen Wein. Ich habe eine Alkoholunverträglichkeit.

Ich trinke keinen Alkohol. Ich bin noch nicht 21 Jahre alt.

Kleiner Hinweis

Die Cola means the specific Coke/Pepsi drinks, but is also the word in German for soda/pop.

Cola-Light is Diet Coke.

Let’s practice.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was trinkst du nicht? Is there a beverage that you do not drink? Write that down in your written journal now. Place kein or keinen in front of the drink based on the models above.
Then record yourself in your audio journal reading your list of avoided beverages. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned to 1) recognize words for beverages among other food words, 2) name at least two beverages you drink, and 3) name at least one beverage you do not drink.
If you are feeling unsure about any part of the expanded introduction, go back to that section and review.
Look at the pictures below. What beverages do you see? Write them in your written journal. Are they beverages that you drink? Go through each one and answer ja or nein aloud.
