When you talk about your best friend (or any friendship), you may want to talk about their personality or their physical appearance, perhaps in contrast to yourself. In this lesson, we will work on making statements about your friend. In future lessons, you will learn how to make comparisons. In the end, you will be able to 1) name some of your best friend’s personality traits and 2) name some of your best friend’s physical characteristics.

How would you describe your best friend? More specifically, how would you describe their personality? Read along as Yasmin and Max tell you about their best friends. Complete the activity along with the reading.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Using the modeled language above, describe your best friend, stating at least how tall they are and what eye and hair color they have.  Record everything in your written journal.
Now record this in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

Die Europäische Zentralbank (EZB)

Die Europäische Zentralbank (EZB) steht in Frankfurt am Main im Stadtteil Ostend. Sie hat zwei hohe Türme, den Nordturm mit 185m und den Südturm mit 165m. In der EZB arbeiten ungefähr 2.300 Menschen. Die Deutsche Bundesbank, die nationale Zentralbank von Deutschland, hat ebenfalls ihren Sitz in Frankfurt. Beide Banken sind wichtig für die Stabilität des europäischen Geldsystems.

The European Central Bank (ECB) is located in the east end district of Frankfurt am Main. It has two tall towers, the North Tower and the South Tower, which together are 201 meters high. Approximately 2,300 people work at the ECB. The Deutsche Bundesbank, Germany’s national central bank, is also headquartered in Frankfurt. Both banks are important for the stability of the European monetary system.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned how to 1) name some of your best friend’s personality traits and 2) name some of your best friend’s physical characteristics. If you are feeling unsure about any part of the expanded introduction, go back to that section and review.
Imagine you are in that café in Germany again, talking to the person who just might become a friend. You are getting to know each other. You’ve covered the basic information and are now talking to each other about your best friends. This potential new friend says, “Erzähl mal von deinem besten Freund – oder bester Freundin oder besta Freund*in!” (Tell me about your best friend.) Write out your response in your journal, using the language modeled in this lesson and the previous lesson. Be sure to include their name, age, where they are from and now live, how long you’ve known them, what they are like, and what they look like.
Remember that you can ask most questions back by simply saying, “und du?” For a conversation about your friends, you could more specifically say, “Und bei dir?” or “Und dein bester Freund?”
When you are done, record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied. As always, you can have a more authentic conversation by meeting with a classmate and recording together!
