4.12 Wie lange machst du das schon?

Hallo alle zusammen!

Zum Aufwärmen machen wir unseren Tagesminiplausch und eine Wiederholung.

Wiederholung

In the previous lesson, you learned how to express your talents and abilities. Let’s review what you have learned.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Imagine you are trying to impress someone with your talents. In your written journal write down the hobbies in German that come to mind that you can do well. Schwimmen? Kochen? Sticken? Mindcraft spielen? Then think about the important word you learned that indicates ability. Write that word now.

Lektionsüberblick

As you talk more about your hobbies and share your interests with potential new friends, you will likely want to ask and share how long and why you each practice your hobbies and other free time activities. This is particularly true for things you do well. In this lesson, we will take our previous knowledge about the length of relationships and apply it to our hobbies and other free time activities. In the end, you will be able to 1) talk about how long you have had/participated in your hobby/activity and 2) simply state why you like your hobby/activity.

1) Length of Hobby

Are you a newbie with your hobby or have you been doing your hobby for a long time? Notice how expressing how long you have done an activity in German is a little different than in English. Read the comic and see what you notice. Then listen to the audio and read the statements aloud.

Let’s practice!

Remember: You can ask the question back with “Und du?

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was ist dein Lieblingshobby? Wie lange machst du das schon? Answer the questions about your favorite hobby and how long you’ve been doing it in your written journal. Be sure to use the language modeled here. Would you like a challenge (and more practice)? Answer this question for all of your hobbies.
Now record your answers in German in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

2) Saying why you like your hobby

Whether or not someone asks you, Warum machst du dein Hobby gern? (Why do you enjoy your hobby?), we often talk about what we like about our hobbies and other free time activities, when we talk about our hobbies. What are your reasons? Listen to and read their statements about their free time activities, hear the question about why they enjoy that activity, and then listen to and read their responses.

Let’s practice!

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was ist dein Lieblingshobby oder deine Lieblingsfreizeitaktivität? Warum machst du es gern? What is your favorite your hobby or free time activity? Why do you like to do it? Choose a response from above and customize it to fit your hobby. For example, if playing soccer is fun for you, substitute Fußball (or Fußball spielen) for Musik machen to create Fußball spielen macht mir Spaß.
The temptation will be strong to think of your answer in English and try to translate it into German. Instead, focus on using the German you know and use the modeled language above and from past lessons (e.g. 3.1 and 3.2, characteristics). Remember: You are only at the beginning of your German language learning journey. Precision is not yet important!
Then record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned 1) talk about how long you have had/participated in your hobby/activity and 2) simply state why you like your hobby/activity. If you are feeling unsure about any part, go back to that section and review.
Now imagine you are on your study abroad to a German-speaking country and a new acquaintance, who you hope will become your friend, spots you doing one of your hobbies in a park. The person asks, Wie lange machst du das schon? How will you respond? Can you think of how you might continue the conversation? For example, you could say “Hast du ein Hobby?
In your written journal, write out a dialogue between you and this acquaintance about your hobbies beginning with the prompt and using the language modeled in this lesson and in previous lessons.
Then record yourself in your audio journal. As always, you can meet with a classmate and write and record together!
