1.2 Wie schreibt man das?

Hallo alle zusammen!

Let’s warm up our daily small talk (Tagesminiplausch) and a brief review (Wiederholung). If you do not remember how to do the Tagesminiplausch, you can find the instructions in Lektion 1.1.

Wiederholung

In the previous lesson, you learned how to say hello, your name, and your pronouns. Let’s review what you have learned.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Write in your journal, how you would greet someone and say your name.

Lektionsüberblick (Lesson overview)

In this lesson, we will expand our introductory conversation to be able to 1) Ask someone for their name, 2) Spell your own name, 3) Say “nice to meet you”, and 4) Say “Goodbye”.

1) How to ask someone for their name

It’s time to practice asking for someone’s name. Watch the video and repeat after the wolf.

Now let’s bring the question and answer together.

What’s your name? My name is Yasmin.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Imagine you are at Yellowstone Park admiring the buffalo, when you hear someone speaking German. Write your introductory conversation in your journal. It should include 1) a greeting, 2) My name is…, 3) My pronouns are… (if you want to name them), 4) What is your name?
Now record this introductory conversation in German in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

Kleiner Hinweis

There are three different words for “you” in German!
du -> singular, informal
ihr -> plural, informal
Sie -> singular and plural, formal
In this course, we will focus on the informal you, du.
If you want to use the formal you, Sie, just use the infinitive (= the base form of the verb that you will find in a dictionary).

2) How to spell your name

Listen to the dialogue.

Of course, learning to spell your name requires that you know how to say the letters that spell you name. The German and English alphabets share some similarities, but many of the letters are pronounced differently. Let’s go through the letters paying close attention to the letters that form your first and last name.

If you enjoy learning by song, then here is the German alphabet song.

Jetzt bist du dran!

In your audio journal, record yourself spelling your first and last name. Be sure to practice this a few times before recording.  You can rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

3) How to say “It’s nice to meet you”

We are getting to close to the end of our introductory conversation. After you have said your name and perhaps your pronouns, and then have asked for the other person’s name and perhaps how to spell it, it is generally polite to say “It’s nice to meet you”.

Both “Freut mich!” and “Schön, dich kennenzulernen!” mean “(It’s) nice to meet you!”

Here are some additional variations on “It’s nice to meet you!”

Jetzt bist du dran!

Pick your favorite “nice to meet you” and write it in your journal. Practice saying it. If you are not sure how to say it, go back to the audio or video recording above.

4) How to say “Goodbye”

Jetzt bist du dran!

How do you typically say goodbye in English? Which German goodbye do you like the most? Write it in your journal! Then practice saying it.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned how to expand your introduction in German by 1) asking someone for their name, 2) spelling your own name, 3) saying “it’s nice to meet you”, and 4) saying goodbye. If you are feeling unsure about any part of the expanded introduction, go back to that section and review.
Now write out your complete introduction in your journal (including a greeting, saying your name, and your pronouns, if desired) and then record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.
