In this lesson, you will be connecting your German to the world around you by presenting a description of various murals from the Laramie Mural Project in Laramie, Wyoming. Get to know the Laramie Mural Project before you dive into our lesson. In the end, you will be able to 1) talk about color hues, 2) and color amounts, 3) say that you like something, and 4) give a short presentation about your favorite mural.

The Laramie Mural Project

Public art offers us a fantastic way to explore art, image, meaning, and color. For that reason, we are going to explore the murals in downtown Laramie online and/or offline. In the links below, you can see images of the murals and a suggested route, if you want to tour many of the downtown murals IRL. A walking or biking tour of the murals could be a great way to get to know your classmates for any students located in Laramie.

Kleiner Hinweis

The German language doesn’t have silent e‘s at the end of words like English does (e.g. love, come, have). So, the e‘s at the end of words like die bunte Fahne have a sound at the end. Listen to the examples.

1) How to talk about color hues

The German word hell is a false friend, meaning it looks exactly like an English word, but it doesn’t have the same meaning at all. See if you can figure out what the three words across mean by looking at the examples and pictures.

2) How to talk about color amounts

Now let’s consider how to say the amount of something. See if you can figure out what the four words on the left mean by looking at the examples and pictures.

Now look at the mural, read and listen to the description.

Look at the bear mural above. Choose a color and create a sentence in your written journal using sehr viel, viel, ein bisschen, or wenig to describe the prominence of the color in the mural.

 

3) How to say that you like something

There are a couple ways to say that you like something in German. Here is a common way. Read, listen, then complete the activities.

Mir gefällt die Farbe. I like the color
Mir gefallen die Farben. I like the colors

Kleiner Hinweis

For those of you who took Spanish, do you remember learning “Me gusta…”? If so, “Mir gefällt…”/”Mir gefallen…” is the exact same concept in German.
Mir gefällt das Bild. I like the picture. Me gusta la foto.
Mir gefallen die Bilder I like the pictures. Me gustan las fotos.

What do you like about the murals you have seen? The colors? The pictures within them? Create a sentence using the mir gefallen/mir gefällt structure above to describe one thing you like about your favorite mural.
Then record yourself … If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording.

4) How to present on your favorite mural

Guten Tag! Ich heiße Sofia Müller. Ich bin 21 Jahre alt. Ich komme aus Hannover und ich wohne in Laramie. Mein Lieblingswandbild in Laramie ist “Tierra y Libertad” von Talal Cocker. Mir gefallen die Farben. Im Bild gibt es sehr viel weiß, viel gelb, dunkelrot, braun, und schwarz, ein bisschen grün, und ein bisschen orange.
