Thema 1: Begrüßungen und sich kennenlernen

What do you think this means?
Guten Tag! Ich heiße Sofia Müller.
Or this?
Hallo! Ich heiße Matteo Schmidt!

If you guessed that two people called Sofia Müller and Matteo Schmidt are saying hello and telling you their names, then you are already well on your way to mastering German!

Even if you guessed only part of that correctly, you are well on your way.

And if none of that made sense, no worries, it will by the end of this unit.

Here is the plan: By the end of this unit, you will be able to have a basic, introductory conversation in German. This means that you will be able to:

  • greet someone in German
  • tell your name and spell it
  • say your pronouns
  • say your age
  • say your favorite color
  • ask a peer for some of this information
  • say goodbye

As you begin the first lesson, you may notice that some of the words have alternating blue and black letters. The colors indicate where the syllable breaks are so that you may feel more comfortable with the longer words. You will also find audio buttons next to some of those larger words and other repeated phrases.
