In the previous lesson, you learned the difference between studieren and lernen, and how to say when you study. Let’s review what you have learned.

Wann und was lernst du? When and what do you study? Make a note of the subjects you study and when you study them in your written journal.

Lektionsüberblick

In this lesson, we will continue to expand on your ability to talk about your studies. This lesson will focus on where you study for class. In the end, you will be able to 1) name some studying locations and 2) say where you study for class.

1) Wo lernst du?

You have worked with the question word Wo before. Recall what it means in German (Hint: It’s a bit of a false friend). Wo is about location, location, location. Let’s look at possible answers to the question: Wo lernst du?

Ich lerne in der Bibliothek.
Ich lerne zu Hause.
Ich lerne bei einem Freund.
Ich lerne bei einer Freundin.
Ich lerne in einem Café.
Ich lerne in einem Park.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Wo lernst du? Where do you study? Choose a potential answer from above and write it in your written journal. If you have another favorite study location that is not listed above, feel free to use that instead. Remember you can always ask your teacher about the appropriate vocabulary to express yourself.
Now record this location in German in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

2) Ich lerne in/bei…

Look again at the example sentences from above. What do you notice about the little words leading up to the location given?

Ich lerne in der Bibliothek/in einem Café/in einem Park.

Ich lerne bei einem Freund/bei einer Freundin.

Ich lerne zu Hause.

Using these sentences as guides, complete the following activity for practice.

 

Jetzt bist du dran!

Now write out your favorite study location. Then write down your second favorite place to study. What do you notice about the little words leading up to the location? Are they the same or different? Why do you think that might be? Then record yourself in your audio journal saying your two study locations. Record them until you are satisfied.

 

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned to 1) name some studying locations and 2) say where you study for class. If you are feeling unsure about any part of the expanded introduction, go back to that section and review.
Now imagine your German friend has invited you to study together. This person would like to know where you usually study. Wo lernst du? What is your response? Record your answer in your audio journal saying your two study locations. Record them until you are satisfied.
