4.7 Was ich gern mache – Kreative Hobbys

Hallo allerseits!

Zum Aufwärmen machen wir unseren Tagesminiplausch und eine Wiederholung.

Wiederholung

In the previous lesson, you learned how to to recognize questions about when and where to meet, some possible answers to those questions, and you also practiced the days of the week. Let’s review!

Jetzt bist du dran!

Wann und wo triffst du mit deinen Freunden? In your written journal, write down when and where you normally meet with friends.

Lektionsüberblick

The topic of hobbies feels infinite. Our goal in the first semester of learning German is to be able to name a couple hobbies. It can be the things you enjoy most or it can be the words that are easiest for you to learn. You are welcome to learn all of your relevant hobby vocabulary for all of your hobbies, or stick with 2-3. Instead of just showing you a small handful of the most typical hobbies, we want present a large number of hobbies for two reasons: 1) You will hopefully find at least two of your hobbies and 2) you can begin to acquire a passive vocabulary of hobbies, i.e. that you are able to hear/read some of the words and recognize them as hobbies, even if you do not always remember what they mean exactly.

Because there are so many different kinds of hobbies, we will “only” cover creative hobbies in this lesson. (Lektion 4.8 will introduce you to sports, Lektion 4.9 to online hobbies, and Lektion 4.10 to other hobbies and other free time activities). In the end, you will be able to 1) recognize different kinds of creative hobbies  –  handcrafts, art, music, and cooking – and 2) name some hobbies you participate in.

1) Kreative Hobbys

Handarbeit

Click through handicrafts and listen to the sentences. Then complete the crossword to help you recognize the words.

Kunst

Play a game of memory to build your vocabulary around artistic hobbies.

Musik machen

For those musicians among us, find your instrument below.

Even more instruments -> Noch mehr Instrumente.

In der Küche

Cooking is a hobby for many. Learn a few key phrases.

Jetzt bist du dran!

In your written journal, write down at least one hobby from above that intrigues you or that you actively do.
Now record this in German in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

2) Was ich gern mache…

Read and listen to the comic.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was machst du gern? Answer the question in your written journal, using the examples in the comic as a template.
Then record yourself. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned to 1) recognize different kinds of creative hobbies –  handcrafts, art, music, and cooking – and 2) name some hobbies you participate in. If you are feeling unsure about any part of the expanded introduction, go back to that section and review.
Now write out all of the hobbies that resonated with you in this lesson or ones that you do not like. Then record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording.
