4.1 Pflanzen- und Tierwelt: Haus- und Nutztiere
Lektionsüberblick
Animals play an important part in most people’s lives in one way or another. Therefore, learning how to talk about a variety of animals is helpful, or at a minimum, being able to talk about the animals that are relevant to you and your life is important. In the end, you will be able to 1) identify a variety of pets and farm animals and say which animals you like, 2) talk about your current pet ownership and/or plans for pet ownership, and 3) identify relevant rules for pet ownership in Liechtenstein and other German-speaking countries.
1) Haus- und Nutztiere
You probably already know how to say the names of several animals in German. Let’s continue to grow that base vocabulary. To that end, please take some time to move through the activities below.
Let’s begin with common Haustiere (pets). Using process of elimination and your knowledge of cognates, what do you already know?
Now, listen to the Germans explain the animals they often see in their day-to-day lives. Are their answers similar to what your answers would be? Complete the activity[1] that follows.
Let’s focus now on common animals on a farm (Tiere auf dem Bauernhof/Nutztiere) with these activities[2]. See which ones you already know.
Read and listen to Annika and Karl as they give their opinions on animals.

You can read this fun article about Hund gegen Katze. Dogs and cats definitely have their respective advantages and disadvantages. Welche hast du lieber und warum? Which do you prefer and why? Write your answer in your written journal. Then record your response in your audio journal. Finally, with a classmate or German-speaking friend, ask their opinion on the matter.
2) Meine Haustiere
Watch the following video about having Haustiere. What advantages (Vorteile) of pets are mentioned in the song. Do you agree or disagree?
Now, read and listen as others discuss their current and future pet situations. Pay close attention because in a moment, you will be discussing yours!

Consider your responses and then write them down in your written journal. Remember you can use the models above to help you construct your ideas.
3) Tierhaltungsregeln
Having a pet in Europe is quite different than having a pet in America. There are rules to follow and fees to pay, and they are generally enforced. Imagine that you are considering moving to Deutschland, Liechtenstein, die Schweiz, or Österreich, and you plan to take your pet. You need to read up on what that means for both you and your cat. Take some to research your intended country. The links below might prove helpful, but feel free to expand beyond those sites that are listed. Then complete the activity that follows.

In this lesson, you learned how talk about 1) identify a variety of pets and farm animals and say which animals you like, 2) talk about your current pet ownership and/or plans for pet ownership, and 3) identify relevant rules for pet ownership in Liechtenstein and other German-speaking countries. If you are feeling unsure about any part of this lesson, go back to that section and review.
Let’s put it all together now. As you think more about living in a German-speaking country with your pet or getting a pet, while you are abroad, remember that we use words like wäre, hätte, würde, müsste to talk about an uncertain or wished for future. Write out some sentences about your future pet ownership abroad using the language to talk about an uncertain future.
