2.3 Die Arbeitssuche

With some background knowledge of the kinds of industries and workplaces as well as the respective social safety nets that exist in German-speaking Europe, it is time to turn our attention to job advertisements (Stellenanzeigen). Most ads are organized into three parts: what you would be doing, what degree or experience you need to apply, and what advantages the employer can offer to you. They are not always organized in the same order. Many have each part labeled, but some do not. Some labels are more straightforward (Ihre Aufgaben = your tasks, Qualifikationen) and some are more descriptive. We will look at the vocabulary necessary to understand each of these parts. You will also notice that they also vary in register: Some address the job seeker with the formal you (Sie) and some with the informal you (du). In the end, by identifying 1) key elements in a job description, 2) the required qualifications, 3) the benefits meaningful to you, you will be able to read job listings to 4) identify a position with your specifications.
Before we get started, let’s talk about register. When we use this word in relation to communication, it means how we address the people around us. For example, you probably call your friends by their first name or even nicknames, which means you speak to them in an informal register. If you address your professor with their title or your parents’ friends with Mr./Ms./Mrs., that means you speak to them in a formal register.
You will find the same naming differentiation in German-speaking countries (first name basis = informal, last name basis = formal). Unlike English, which has just one word for you, German has four: Sie, du, ihr, and man. |
The formal you = Sie (always capitalized) and refers to one or more people. You generally use Sie with people you do not know, people who are older than you, and people in positions of authority.
The informal you = du and refers to one person. You generally use du with fellow students, close friends, and children. More recently, it is also increasingly common to hear du even among strangers, e.g. in a hip cafe or between young people meeting for the first time. There are even companies such as Otto that have implemented a Kulturwandel (cultural change) in their company by requiring everyone – regardless of title/seniority – to address each other with du. Ihr is the informal you for more than one person (like “y’all” or “you all”). |
When you give instructions or general information to an unknown audience, the English speaker typically uses the word you. In this case, you are not speaking to a specific person, i.e. you could not replace you with the name(s) of a person/people. In German, this impersonal you = man and it behaves like er/sie/xier/es.

The Deutsch im Alltag series focuses on teaching you du, since it is meant to help you adjust to life quickly in a German-speaking country by teaching you the language necessary to make friends. Introducing multiple forms of you in the first year is often confusing for the native English speaker. Now, in your second year of German, you should begin to have the capacity to acquire Sie (and ihr). Particularly if you plan to work abroad, being able to address German speakers with the formal you is important. |
1) Die Stellenbeschreibung
We will first discuss the part of the job listing that lists what your tasks would be in that job. This may not always be the first category in the job listing, so it’s good to review the various ways this category may be labeled. It is also helpful to note whether the ad uses a more or less formal register (see above). This may give you a clue about the work culture (or the desired work culture) of the company or organization. Let’s look at the various ways that job listings have labeled the category “Your tasks on the job”. Can you guess, which ones use a (more) formal register and which ones use a less formal register?
Now let’s read and listen to some key words you may find in this category.

2) Die Qualifikationen
A second category in the Stellenanzeige is a list of the qualifications that the company wants you to have. Sometimes the category will be called Qualifikationen, but you may also see:

The Stellenanzeige will typically list required qualifications and may mention desirable (wünschenswerte) ones. You will generally find a required level of education or training and a number of required hard and soft skills. Depending on the kind of position, you may also find required or desired work experience. Can you guess what these are called in German?
Now let’s sort these real qualifications taken from various Stellenanzeigen into the kind of qualification by dragging the items into the correct area.

3) Arbeitgeberleistungen
A final category in the Stellenanzeige is a list of benefits that the company is offering for this position. This list will not necessarily be comprehensive. This category can also have a number of different headings:

What type of workplace benefits (Arbeitgeberleistungen) are important to you? Vielleicht suchst du einen Arbeitgeber, der die Work-Life-Balance fördert, oder vielleicht ist ein Firmenwagen am wichstigsten. Employee benefits are considered quite good in German-speaking countries. The following cards present a number of Arbeitgeberleistungen (workplace benefits).

Look through the card deck and the table again and answer the questions in your written journal by noting which tangible and intangible benefits are the most important for you. List them under “das muss ich haben“. Look through the benefits again and note which ones would be nice to have. List them under “das hätte ich gerne“.

Let’s go job hunting! You can look at this job site to explore jobs in Liechstenstein. Be sure to enter a Berufsgruppe at the top to narrow down the type of work you’d like to search for.
After exploring available opportunities in your field, write in your journal the types of jobs you encountered (that are the most interesting to you), the types of benefits you saw listed, and any other noteworthy information that stood out to you. Was hast du herausgefunden? Welcher Job passt am besten zu dir? Warum? (z. B. Diese Firma bietet flexible Arbeitzeiten und hat eine Kantine). Write your reasons down in your written journal.
