1.4 Mein Traumhaus
Lektionsüberblick
In our final lesson on home, you will dream big, imagining the style, location, and furnishings of your dream house. In contrast to our previous work on talking about a mostly certain future, we will work on talking about hypothetical situations. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to 1) describe your dream house, 2) describe your dream house location, 3) detail the household items you would like to have for your dream house, and 4) read real estate listings and compare with your dream house.
1) Mein Traumhaus
We have considered the future in past lessons. Let’s continue this idea by dreaming about the future. The words we use when we are dreaming about the future are a little different than when we are expressing clear, planned intentions for the future. Read, listen, and repeat what you hear in the comic below. What do you notice about how Heimo and Kat talk about their dream house?

Wie wäre dein Traumhaus? Groß oder klein? Alt oder neu? Was hätte dein Traumhaus? Ein Schwimmbad? Eine Terrasse? Ein großes Wohnzimmer? Ein Kino im Haus? Describe your dream home in your journal. Be as detailed as you can. Then record your description in your audio journal.
2) Die Lage meines Traumhauses
Wo wäre dein Traumhaus? Where would you dream house be located? Maybe you have always dreamed of living in Germany or on the California coast with a beautiful view of the ocean. Read the descriptions below.

Next, answer the following question: Wo wäre dein Traumhaus? Describe the location of your dream home in your written journal. Then record your description in your audio journal.
3) Mein Traumhaus ausstatten
Wie würdest du dein Traumhaus ausstatten? Welche Möbel hättest du? How would you furnish and decorate your house? Let’s look at one kind of Traumhaus in Monaco. Wie ist das Haus im Video ausgestattet? Which part of the Ausstattung do you like? Look closely at the design, furnishings, and equipment. Then answer the questions that follow.
Jetzt bist du dran!
Was für Ausstattung hätte dein Traumhaus? You can visit the following website to look at ways to furnish rooms and outside areas. Spend some time looking at the possibilities; consider floors (Boden), windows (Fenster), walls (Wände), technical equipment (Technik), furniture (Möbel). Then make a list of the furnishings that are most important to you.
4) Mein Traumhaus finden
You have had some time to consider the features you would like to have in your dream house, as well as the ideal location for your dream house. Now, let’s read some real estate listings to discover which house is the best match for you. But before we begin, look over your journal entries for this lesson regarding location, style, and amenities.
Now click through the listings, paying special attention to the location and features of the home or apartment. Passen sie zu deinem Bild? Do any of the properties match your list?
Jetzt bist du dran!
Read again the listings in the presentation above. Welches Haus gefällt dir? Warum? If none of the listings are what you have in mind, you can look at more real estate listings here:
Wohnungsanzeigen Liechtenstein Wohnungsanzeigen in der Schweiz
Wohnungsanzeigen Deutschland Wohnungsanzeigen Österreich
Choose the home that fits you the best. In your written journal, write in German why it is the best fit for you (remember that you know the word weil, which means because). Some example sentences could begin like,
|
When you are done writing down your rationale, read your sentences aloud in your audio journal.
Jetzt kombinieren!
In the previous lesson, you learned to describe the features of your house and the rooms in your house. In this lesson, you learned to 1) describe your dream house, 2) describe your dream house location, 3) detail the household items you would like to have for your dream house and 4) read real estate listings and compare with your dream house.
Let’s combine these skills. To do this, you can read Francisco’s description of his Traumhaus. Can you tell what location and features are most important to him? Write down the most important ideas that you gather from Fransisco’s description in your journal. Is his Traumhaus similar or different than yours? Warum oder warum nicht? In German, explain your answer in your written journal.
