3.4 Reiseziele

Lektionsüberblick

With your preferred kind of trip in mind (Strandurlaub? Wandertour? Sprachurlaub?), we will turn our attention to being able to talk about geographical and geopolitical locations. As you plan your next trip, you will also think about some basic things you need to pack.  At the end of this lesson, you will be able to 1) identify different kinds of geographical destinations and name your preferred kind, 2) identify world geopolitical destinations, 3) use basic travel vocabulary, and 4) talk about your next destination.

1) Geografische Reiseziele

We know what kind of trip we want to take. Now let’s look at places we can travel to – Wohin fährst du gerne? Wo machst du gerne Urlaub? This will mean learning some geographical features. Which places do you enjoy the most? Here is the first set:

Now look at the second set:
Let’s check your recall!
image Die Ärzte’s popular 1988 song Westerland is a hommage to a part of the island Sylt in der Nordsee.

You can watch the music video and read along with the lyrics.
Vokabelhilfe:
der Wannseeein See in Berlin
die Sehnsucht – the yearning
den Verstand verlieren – to lose one’s mind
die Nordsee – the North Sea
das Ufer – the shore
retten – to save
untergehen – to sink down/ to drown
unter sich sein – to be among others

Jetzt bist du dran!

Wohin fährst du gerne? Wo machst du gern Urlaub? In you written journal, answer the questions stating which places you like to travel to and/or where you like to vacation. Be sure to use the modeled language above.

Wohin fährst du am liebsten? Wo machst du am liebsten Urlaub? Look at your answers and respond to these questions by stating which are your favorite.

When you are done, record your answers in your audio journal.

2) Geopolitische Reiseziele

Wohin fährst du gerne? In welche Länder fährst du am liebsten? Now we’ll look at how to talk about traveling to countries, states, and cities. To start, let’s look at some related general vocabulary. Some words you may already know, some you may be able to guess from the cognate.
Now let’s look at how we talk about going to countries and cities. Read and listen to the following sentences. Then practice! Be sure to click through to each slide (there are two sets of arrows).
As you are learning, the names of some countries require an article. You can read this article from Deutsch Welle to see a more extensive list of countries with articles in their names.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Consider the different countries you read about in the slide show above. What country calls to you and why? Griechenland, Rumänien …oder irgendwo anders? In your written journal, take a minute to answer these questions, paying special attention to the phrases used to describe travel to that country (Z. B in die Schweiz, nach Spanien, usw.)

3) Reisewortschatz

Eine Reise von tausend Meilen beginnt mit dem ersten Schritt…and perhaps a passport and a good map app! That is to say that you will need to bring a few things with you when you travel. Let’s review or learn the most common items.

Now let’s practice!

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was nimmst du davon immer mit? Was nimmst du davon manchmal mit? Was nimmst du davon nie mit?

Look at the picture and then answer the questions in your written journal, e.g. Ich nehme immer meinen Reisepass mit, wenn ich ins Ausland reise.

Gibt es andere Sachen, die du immer auf die Reise mitnimmst? Challenge yourself and answer this question as well.

4) Wohin wirst du reisen?

Now, let’s plan ahead for real. Take a look at your planner or calendar. What trips will you be taking this year? Are you traveling for spring or summer break? Will you visit friends or family somewhere this year? How would you explain this trip in detail to a friend when they ask? Read and listen to Chloe’s upcoming plans. Then complete the questions that follow.

Jetzt kombinieren

In this lesson on travel, you learned how to 1) identify different kinds of geographical destinations and name your preferred kind, 2) identify world geopolitical destinations, 3) use basic travel vocabulary, and 4) talk about your next destination. Now let’s combine everything!

Wohin wirst du dieses Jahr reisen? In welches Land oder in welche Stadt wirst du fahren? Welche geografische Elemente gefallen dir am besten? Was wirst du packen bzw. mitnehmen?

Consider each question and answer in complete sentences in your written journal using Chloe’s answer as a model. Then record yourself in your audio journal.
