Chapter 8 Activity: Your Consulting Persona
Now that you’ve read about the many “hats” writing consultants wear, and heard how University of Wyoming consultants have developed their own consulting personas over time, it’s time to consider what your persona might look like.
In a single developed paragraph, describe who you think you might be as a consultant, or who you hope to become. You might reflect on which “hats” from Ryan and Zimmerelli’s framework you’re most drawn to, and why. Are you hoping to be a kind and encouraging Ally? A skill-building Coach? A thoughtful Commentator? You may also reference anything that’s stood out to you from earlier chapters, assigned readings, or your interview with the Writing Center consultant.
This is a projection. Your consulting persona will evolve over time, and that’s the whole point! Use this reflection as a snapshot of who you are now (or, who you think you are), and revisit it later in the semester to reflect on how your style has changed.
Optional bonus: Jot down a couple of qualities (or hats) you don’t think will come naturally to you. Articulating those to yourself might help you remain open to unexpected growth throughout your first semester.
