This book is for students enrolled in the University of Wyoming’s ReNEW and RN to BSN nursing program taking Nursing 4640, Health Equity.

Each module section contains much of the required reading for the week. Please refer to WyoCourses for any additional assigned reading.

Learning Objectives

On completion of this course, the student will meet the following outcomes:

  1. Recognize the effect of healthcare disparities and inequalities on vulnerable populations. (PLO 6; AACN 1.2c, 3.6b, 5.1a, 7.2b; 7.3d)
  2. Assess healthcare delivery as it relates to uninsured clients and undocumented individuals. (PLO 6; AACN 3.4e, 7.2c)
  3. Analyze the impact that a lack of insurance has on vulnerable populations. (PLO 3, 6; AACN 3.3a, 3.3b, 3.4b, 5.1d, 7.2c)
  4. Identify barriers and integrate solutions to those barriers that prevent clients from seeking out healthcare services. (PLO 3, 6; AACN 2.8e, 3.1c, 3.1e, 3.1g, 3.2c, 3.1i, 9.3g, 9.4a, 9.6c)
  5. Compare and contrast vulnerable populations at the local, state, and federal level. (PLO 3, 6; AACN 3.1d, 7.3d)
