4 Vowels: Height

Articulatory quadrilateral – Lancaster Glossary of Child Development

When we think about vowel height we are asking ourselves, “how high in the oral cavity is the tongue to make this vowel?”  An /i/ vowel (as in the word “bead”), for example, is very high in the oral cavity. Whereas an /ɑ/ vowel (as in “pot”) is quite low–you probably even lower your jaw when you produce it!
