1 Chapter 1: Place of Articulation

Place of articulation is the description of where a sound is made in the oral tract and applies to consonants. Consonants require some sort of closure of the articulators (as in /b/) or a narrowing (as in /f/). The location of this closure or narrowing is the place of articulation. In the image below, you can see the articulators involved in the production of speech:
