1) Stammbaum machen

a) Daten sammeln (Collect data): Since your Stammbaum should contain the Namen and Alter/Geburtsjahre of your extended family members (mother, father, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents), you should begin by collecting the necessary data. Look how Sofia organized her family information in fall 2024:

What do you think geb. Schmidt could mean?
geb. -> geboren, thus geb. indicates the name given at birth
Until 1958, women were required to change their family name upon marriage. According to a study from 2018, 75% of the newly married heterosexual couples use the man’s name, 6% the woman’s, 12% keep their own names, and 8% choose a hyphenated name.
In 2017, same-sex couples were given equal rights in marriage and name choice.

b) Stammbaum zeichnen (Draw family tree): With everything organized, you can draw your family tree either by hand or electronically. As you can see, Sofia included images of herself and her family members in her Stammbaum:

2) Die Familie präsentieren

Now that your Stammbaum is ready, you can prepare your presentation on your family. First look at the sentences Sofia wrote down about herself and her family in preparation for her presentation:

Hallo! Ich heiße Sofia Müller und ich bin 20 Jahre alt. Ich komme aus Hannover. Ich habe eine kleine Kernfamilie in einer großen erweiterten Familie. In meiner Kernfamilie gibt es meine Mutter Anika, meinen Vater Stefan und meinen Bruder Noah. Anika ist 59, Stefan 61 und Noah 24. Wir haben auch eine Katze Mia.

Die Zwillingsschwester meiner Mutter Amelie und ihre Frau Karen haben einen Sohn, meinen Cousin Leo. Tante Amelie ist natürlich auch 59. Karen ist 56 und Leo ist 26. Nur die Mutter meiner Mutter lebt noch. Meine Oma Gertrud ist 83. Mein Opa Eberhard wurde 90. Ihre Vorfahren kommen aus Bayern.

Der jüngere Bruder meines Vaters Markus hat drei Kinder aus zwei Ehen. Meine Kusine Kaja hatte Onkel Markus mit seiner ersten Frau Lisa. Lisa lebt nicht mehr. Onkel Markus hat einen Stiefsohn Tekin, von seiner zweiten Frau Nuri. Onkel Markus und Tante Nuri haben zusammen einen Sohn, meinen Cousin Adem. Adem ist 10, Kaja 16, und Tekin 26. Tante Nuri ist 48 und Onkel Markus ist 58. Beide Eltern meines Vaters leben noch. Omi Renate ist 84 und Opi Günter ist 92. Ihre Vorfahren kommen aus Norddeutschland.

Using Sofia’s model, write out the sentences for your presentation in your journal and then read them aloud. You can also listen to Sofia’s recordings above, if you are unsure of any of the words. Once you are done, close your journal, look at your Stammbaum, and practice your presentation. No worries, if you get stuck! You can always reopen your journal, re-listen to Sofia’s recordings, and practice some more.
When you feel ready, record yourself in your audio journal. Do you like how freely and smoothly you speak? If you’re not satisfied yet, practice some more! Then go to Canvas for the directions on submitting your presentation.
