In this lesson, we will talk about our extended families. In the end, you will be able to 1) say who belongs to your extended family (der weitere Familienkreis), 2) talk about family relationships, and 3) ask about family relationships.

1) Mein weiterer Familienkreis

Let’s expand our family vocabulary. Using what you know about cognates (words that look similar in two languages), complete the activity below.

Now watch the following video. Remember you probably won’t understand everything. Practice being comfortable with being uncomfortable. See if you hear any of the vocabulary words from above. What other family words do you recognize? After the video, you will be prompted to answer questions about Sarah and Daniele’s families.

Do you remember how to say that you do not have something or that you have more than one of that thing? Let’s see how that looks with extended family members.

Wer gehört zu deinem erweitertem Familienkreis? Who belongs to your extended family? Using Sarah or Daniele’s description of their family as a template, write a short paragraph describing your family.

 

2) Talk about family relationships

Watch the video with Sarah and Daniele again. How do they describe whether their siblings are older or younger than they are? Are either of them the oldest of their siblings?

After the video, you will answer questions about Sarah and Daniele’s siblings and then you will practice how to say that you are older or younger than a sibling.

 

 

Jetzt bist du dran!

Bist du älter oder jünger als deine Geschwister? Are you older or younger than your siblings? Answer the question in your written journal.
If you are an Einzelkind (only child), answer this question instead: Bist du älter oder jünger als deine Cousins und Kusinen?
Then record your answer in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

 

3) Ask about family relationships

Read and listen to the following questions. What do you think is being asked?

Wie groß ist deine Familie? Hast du Geschwister? Wie heißen deine Eltern? Hast du Haustiere?

 

Jetzt bist du dran!

Look at the questions above. Which questions do you ask when you are getting to know someone? Write those questions in your written journal. Then practice saying them without hesitation. When you are ready, record yourself in your audio journal.

 

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned how to 1) say who belongs to your extended family (der weitere Familienkreis), 2) talk about family relationships, and 3) ask about family relationships. If you are feeling unsure about any part, go back to that section and review.
Imagine you are having a conversation with a potential new friend in Germany. This person asks, “Wie groß ist deine Familie?” Instead of just briefly naming the size, you tell this person about your extended family. Which family members would you mention? In your written journal, write out how you would answer this question with complete sentences. If you have siblings, be sure to note if you are älter or jünger? Perhaps you are the Älteste or the Jüngste. If you are not feeling confident about your sentences, go back to your previous journal entries and/or review this lesson.
When you are ready, record yourself in your audio journal. If you can say these sentences immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, keine Sorgen. Practice until you feel comfortable.
