Wo wohnst du? Think about what you can already say about where you live. Can you name the kind of residence you live in? Or what part of town you are living in? That is what we are working on in this lesson. In the end, you will be able to 1) name typical residences and say what kind of space you live in, 2) name typical living areas and say where you live, 3) say whether you live with other people, 4) say what your future plans are for each.

Read each description. Wo wohnt jede Person?
Sebi sagt: Ich wohne in einem kleinen Zimmer in einem Studierendenwohnheim, weil ich in der Stadt studiere.
Anja und Dirk sagen: Wir wohnen in einem Reihenhaus, weil es ruhig ist.<
Andy und Christian sagen: Wir wohnen in einem großen Einfamilienhaus, weil wir viel Platz brauchen.
Silvia und Mario sagen: . Wir wohnen in einem alten Bauernhaus, das sehr viel Charme hat.
Antonio und Barbara sagen: Wir wohnen in einer Altbauwohnung, die hohe Decken hat.
Ursula und Karl sagen: Wir wohnen in einer Wohnung in einem Hochhaus, weil wir eine schöne Aussicht haben.

Kleiner Hinweis
Up until now you have been using the word wohnen meaning to live. You might also hear the word leben from native speakers (e.g. Wo lebst du?), especially those conversing with a non-native speaker who know that leben is a cognate of “to live”. Wohnen and leben are synonyms with the word wohnen having a bit more emphasis on your geographical location and living situation, while leben encompasses where you live, work, spend time, etc.

Liechtenstein im Blickpunkt
In Liechtenstein ist die offizielle Sprache Deutsch. In Schulen, in den Medien und in offiziellen Texten sagt und schreibt man Liechtenstein. Im Alltag sprechen viele Menschen aber einen alemannischen Dialekt. In diesem Dialekt wird der Name des Landes oft „Liachtaschta“ ausgesprochen. Das ist keine andere offizielle Bezeichnung, sondern nur die gesprochene Form im Dialekt.
The official language in Liechtenstein is German. In schools, in the media, and in official texts, people say and write Liechtenstein. In everyday life, many people speak an Alemannic dialect. In this dialect, the name of the country is often pronounced “Liachtaschta.” This is not a different official name, but only the spoken form in the dialect.

3) (K)eine Mitwohner
Wohnst du alleine oder mit anderen Menschen zusammen? Most college students in the US do not live alone (alleine). Some may still live at home. Many live with other people. Here’s how to talk about the people you live with (or don’t).
Was ist eine WG?
How to talk about the people you live with:
| Ich wohne alleine. | I live alone. |
| Ich wohne bei meiner Familie. | I live with my parents. |
| Ich wohne im Studierendenwohnheim.* | I live in the dorms. |
| Ich wohne in einer WG. | I live with other people/flatmates. |
| Ich wohne mit Freund*innen in einer WG. | I live with my friends. (=we share the place) |
| Ich wohne bei meinen Freund*innen. | I live with my friends. (=they are the owners) |
| Ich wohne in einem Verbindungshaus.* | I live in a fraternity/sorority house. |
| Ich habe 2 Mitbewohner. | I have two flatmates/housemates. |
*Like in English, you do not mention any people in this instance, since it is implied that other students also live there.

You learned about Sebi above. Sebi doesn’t want to live in a dorm forever. What are his future plans?

- Cowboy Joe sagt: Ich wohne in einer WG auf einer mittelgroßen Viehfarm auf dem Land. Ich habe 5 Mitwohner. Nach dem Studium werde mit meinem besten Freund auf einer kleinen Viehfarm auf dem Land wohnen.
- Lisa sagt: Ich wohne im Studierenenwohnheim in der Stadt. Ich habe eine Mitbewohnerin. Nach dem Studium werde ich in einer Altbauwohnung in der Innenstadt wohnen. Ich werde alleine wohnen.
- Markus sagt: Ich wohne in einer WG in einem kleinen Haus am Stadtrand. Nach dem Studium werde ich mit meiner Freundin in einer Neubauwohnung in der Stadt wohnen.

Wo wohnst du? Wohnst du alleine? Wo wirst du nach dem Studium wohnen? Now combine all of these elements into one statement answering these both questions modeled after the examples above.
Now choose two of your future sentences and add the “why” behind your decision to live in that location. It can look like this, “Nach dem Studium werde ich in einer Wohnung in einem Hochhaus in der Innenstadt wohnen, weil ich in der Stadtzentrum arbeiten werde.
