3.1 Mein Unialltag

Lektionsüberblick

Most likely being a student at a university or taking university-level classes is an important component of your life. In this session, you will learn useful vocabulary and expressions to help you describe your experiences, routines, and academic plans. In the end, you will be able to talk about 1) your daily routine at the university,  2) your current course of study, and 3) your class schedule and study habits.

1) Mein Alltag – heute und morgen

If you took German 1020 with us, you might remember that you learned in Chapter 5 of the second semester textbook to describe your daily activities on the university and the types of activities that bookend your typical day such as waking up, getting to school and later eating dinner and going to bed. We are going to review and expand on those concepts now.

Now consider what you will do tomorrow. Perhaps it will be different than today. Remember that we can use a form of werden to talk about the future, like this…

Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf. –> Ich werde um 7 Uhr aufstehen.

Let’s practice talking about tomorrow.

Jetzt bist du dran!

In your written journal, describe your typical day. Then write what you will do tomorrow. When you are done, record your statements. Be sure to practice, before you begin recording and/or rerecord, if your statements do not flow like natural speech.

2) Mein Studium

Was studierst du? Betriebswirtschaft? Musiktherapie? Mathematik? Kein Problem! Let’s start by reviewing the fields of study. If you focused on learning your field of study in previous semesters, expand your vocabulary by committing to memory another Studienfach of perhaps a friend or classmate. Listen and repeat the subjects that are most relevant to you.

Let’s practice. As you match each subject, practice saying the words aloud.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was studierst du? Im welchen Jahr bist du? Answer the questions in your written journal.

When you are done, record your statements. Be sure to practice, before you begin recording and/or rerecord, if your statements do not flow like natural speech.

Mulhouse (in Alsatian: Mìlhüsa) is located in Alsace in eastern France, near the border with Germany and Switzerland. The city is over 1,200 years old and was first mentioned in 803. Mulhouse has a medieval old town with old houses and squares. The city was long influenced by German culture. Therefore, some people speak Alsatian, a German dialect, in addition to French, and many understand German. Today, Mulhouse is also known for its industrial history and museums, such as the Cité de l’Automobile (Automobile Museum).

3) Mein Kursplan und meine Lernroutine

Now let’s practice using vocabulary and structures – many that you already know – to talk about your course plan and study routine. First listen to each student below explain their course schedules.

man with glasses and sweater Young woman holding book young man in collared shirt

What did you notice about the way the students gave the time of their classes? You might have noticed that days and times can move around in the sentence as long as your verb remains in the second position. You might also remember that in German-speaking countries, military time / the 24-hour clock is often used for more official times, like class start and end times. If you need help with the 24-hour clock, listen and repeat the examples in the presentation below.

When you have a full course load or are juggling work, family, and classes, it is essential to have a study routine. This might include information such as wo, wann, and mit wem you will study. Do any of these students have eine Lernroutine like yours?

Listen and repeat.

Kleiner Hinweis

Studieren means to study at a university or college and refers to your academic program or major. Lernen means to study in the general sense, such as reviewing vocabulary, doing homework, or preparing for a test.

Let’s practice.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was ist dein Kursplan und deine Lernroutine? Using the examples above describe the days and times of each of your classes. Then describe how, when, and with whom you regularly study.

When you are done, record your statements. Be sure to practice, before you begin recording and/or rerecord, if your statements do not flow like natural speech.

Jetzt kombininieren

In this lesson, you learned to talk about 1) your daily routine at the university,  2) your current course of study, and 3) your class schedule, study habits.

Now let’s combine what you have learned. Here is what Sebi would say.

Once you have compiled your answer, record yourself in your audio journal. As always, you are more than welcome to meet with a classmate and do your recordings together!
