In the last lesson, we looked at travel destinations. In this lesson, we will learn about methods of transportation. Part of this conversation will be about comparing travel options, considering time, expense, and impact on the environment. In the end, you will be able to 1) identify different kinds of transportation and say which ones you use, 2) compare different kinds of transportation and talk about what you prefer, and 2) book transportation for travel to/in a German speaking country.

1) Transportmittel & öffentliche Verkehrsmittel

Let’s start with a introduction/review of the forms of transportation that you have at your disposal in order to travel throughout Liechtenstein and beyond. Like Germany, Liechtenstein is known for its highly efficient transportation.

Now let’s see some travel plans with Transportmittel in context with the following blog entry.

Sarah ist eine Austauschstudierende. Nach ihrem Ausstauschjahr in Vaduz wird sie in Liechtenstein herumreisen. In ihrem Reise-Blog schreibt sie über ihre Reisepläne.

Los geht’s (2. Juli)

Hallo! Mein Deutschkurs wird bald zu Ende sein. Danach werde ich zwei Wochen durch Liechtenstein reisen. Ich werde mit dem Bus von Vaduz nach Schaan fahren und dann nach Balzers weiterfahren. Am Busbahnhof in Balzers werde ich meine Freund*innen abholen. Sie werden an der Universität Liechtenstein studieren, weil die Uni gute Studiengänge in Wirtschaft und Architektur anbietet. Wir werden etwas Spaß in Balzers haben, und danach werden wir wieder mit dem Bus nach Vaduz fahren, um die Uni zu besuchen. Wir haben auch vor, das Schoss Vaduz zu besichtigen. Ich freue mich darauf!

Now let’s practice talking about vehicles through comparisons.

 

Here are the words you need to say that something is more or the most:

In the following activity, you will compare methods of travel inside of a city, taking into consideration the length of the trip, the expense, the travel time, and the CO2 emissions. Be sure to read the Kleiner Hinweis below before you begin.

Kleiner Hinweis

The German language distinguishes between length and distance using two different adjectives. Lang describes how long something is in size or duration (for example, ein langer Tisch or eine lange Zeit), while weit refers to how far apart things are or how great a distance is (eine weite Strecke, wie weit ist es?). This distinction helps German speakers be more precise about space and measurement.

Answer the questions in your written journal stating your transportation preferences using the modeled language above. For example,

Ich gehe gern zu Fuß. Ich fahre lieber mit dem Auto. Ich fahre am liebsten Fahrrad.

If you want to challenge yourself, state a reason for your preferences. For example,

Ich fahre am liebsten Fahrrad, weil es gesünder als Auto fahren ist.

Balzers ist eine kleine Stadt in Liechtenstein mit etwa 4.700 Einwohnern. Trotz seiner relativ geringen Einwohnerzahl ist es die flächmäßig größte Gemeinde in Liechtenstein. Insgesamt ist Balzers kompakt und fußgängerfreundlich. Viele Wege sind kurz, deshalb kann man den Ort gut zu Fuß erkunden. Geschäfte, Bushaltestellen und wichtige Orte liegen nah beieinander, was Balzers sehr überschaubar macht.

Balzers is a small town in Liechtenstein with approximately 4,700 inhabitants. Despite its relatively small population, it is the largest municipality in Liechtenstein. Overall, Balzers is compact and pedestrian-friendly. Many distances are short, making it easy to explore the town on foot. Shops, bus stops, and important landmarks are all close together, which makes Balzers very manageable for pedestrians.

We’ve compared transportation options and talked about our preferences. It is time to plan! First, we’ll look at two websites, where you can book a flight to Europe and train travel from/to Germany, in order to become familiar with some necessary terminology. Then you can read how Sebi and Claudia are planning their travel.

Read and listen to their plans, then answer the questions on each slide to check your comprehension. Achtung! There are multiple questions on each slide. Please note that it may take a moment for the answer to register and move on to next question.

Here are the websites Claudia and Sebi used to book their transportation for their upcoming trips:

Read through their travel plans again and use the websites to reconstruct their bookings. Pay attention to the day of the week and time of day you are choosing to travel. What differences can you find, if you choose to leave at 9.00 vs. 15.00? Or on a Sunday vs. a Wednesday?

If you want to challenge yourself, look at the transfer times on the first and third websites and try to figure out how to give yourself more time to transfer.

In this lesson, you learned to 1) identify different kinds of transportation and say which ones you use, 2) compare different kinds of transportation and talk about what you prefer, and 2) book transportation for travel to/in a German speaking country. Now let’s combine everything!

Imagine you are going to German-speaking Europe or you are already there and plan to visit another country…

Welche Art Urlaub wirst du machen? Wohin wirst du reisen? Welche Transportmittel wirst du nehmen? Answer the questions in your written journal. Then record yourself in your audio journal.

Using the models above, plan a trip, stating the kind of vacation you plan to take, what your destination will be, and which modes of transportation will you use. Then start the process of booking your transportation (without paying for anything!) by using the websites from the last  Jetzt bist du dran!  (or others, depending on the country and chosen transportation, — be sure to use the German version of the page). Write down or screenshot your connections and expenses.
