6.12 Lebensmittel einkaufen

Grüzi!

Zum Aufwärmen machen wir unseren Tagesminiplausch und eine Wiederholung.

Wiederholung

In the previous lesson, you learned how write an Einkaufsliste based on a recipe. Let’s review the food categories.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was hast du schon? Was hast du nicht? Find a recipe here. In your written journal, write down what you have (Ich habe…) and what you do not have (Ich habe kein(e/n)…) .

Lektionsüberblick

Now that you have your shopping list, you will decide where to do your grocery shopping. In this lesson, you will learn about the similarities and differences with grocery shopping in Germany. In the end, you will be able to 1) recognize and say relevant words for specialty shops and the farmer’s market, 2) say basic phrases while grocery shopping at specialty stores and the farmer’s market, and 3) say where you will go shopping.

Was weißt du schon?

Do you remember how to ask for help while shopping? Let’s check!

1) der Wochenmarkt und die Spezialgeschäfte (the market and specialty shops)

German-speaking countries are fairly well-known for having robust year-round farmers’ markets (Wochenmärkte ) that often take place twice weekly and a variety of specialty shops for some of the different food groups (Metzgerei = butcher, Bäckeri = backery ). Although social trends move away from a full-time stay-at-home parent and the younger generations appreciate the efficiency of being able to buy all of their groceries in one location, im Supermarkt, shopping outside of the Supermarkt is still very popular. This is even more true, if you want to buy foods that are grown/raised/produced locally.

Let’s look at some of the words and phrases you may need to talk about grocery shopping at the Wochenmarkt followed by Spezialgeschäften.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Wo kaufst du ein? Kaufst du auf dem Wochenmarkt ein? Oder in Spezialgeschäften? Oder doch im Supermarkt? Answer the questions your written journal using the the language modeled here. Then record your answers in your audio journal.

2) Auf dem Wochenmarkt einkaufen

Whether you are shopping at the Wochenmarkt or at one of the specialty stores, there are certain questions and phrases we can expect to hear. This means that we can be prepared with our phrases, ensuring a successful transaction.

Look at the interaction in the comic between the farmer and his customer. Listen to their conversation and read along. Even if you do not understand individual words, do you have a general idea what the farmer is asking and saying?

Let’s work with the language!

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was musst du einkaufen? Use your chosen recipe(s) from the last lesson or pick a new recipe and plan out shopping at the Wochenmarkt or a specialty store. In your written journal, write out a dialogue with a Bauer or other salesperson, using the modeled language above.
Then record your dialogue. As always, you may record with a classmate. You can also use the audio from this chapter for the Bauer, since it is not important for you to be able to say his part.

3) Wo ich Lebensmittel kaufe (where I go grocery shopping)

Sofia Müller likes to shop local. Listen to and read along with her statement on  where she goes grocery shopping.

Ich kaufe Obst und Gemüse auf dem Wochenmarkt.

Ich kaufe frische Brötchen und Kuchen beim Bäcker / in der Bäckerei.

Ich kaufe Goudakäse und Ziegenfrischkäse in der Käserei.

Ich kaufe Wurst beim Metzger / in der Metzgerei.

Ich kaufe Getränke und Backzutaten (baking ingredients) im Supermarkt.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Wo kaufst du ein?  Imagine you also want to shop local. Using your recipe from above, write out a shopping list in your written journal with your items listed under the respective specialty shop.
Then record yourself making statements like Sofia’s. If you can make them without writing out sentences, that’s great! Otherwise, be sure to use Sofia’s modeled language to write out your sentences before recording.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned how to 1) recognize and say relevant words for specialty shops and the farmer’s market, 2) say basic phrases while grocery shopping at specialty stores and the farmer’s market, and 3) say where you will go shopping. If you are feeling unsure about any part of this lesson, go back to that section and review.
Imagine again that you are on your study abroad in a German-speaking country and you have decided to invite a new friend to dinner. Look at the recipes again and pick the dishes you want to serve (they can be the same ones from the last lesson or different ones.) Machst du einen Nachtisch? Will you have a dessert? Was hast du schon? Was musst du kaufen? In your written journal, write a Einkaufsliste separating the foods out by specialty food shop/farmer’s market.
Wo kaufst du ein? When you are done, record yourself saying where you are going to shop for the items on your list. You can write out sentences before you record or challenge yourself by doing this recording without writing out sentences.
