1) Wo lernst du gern?

To begin, let’s learn to ask someone where they like to study. By asking, you might discover your next favorite study spot.

Imagine that you are setting up a study session with a German classmate and you’d like to study where they feel most comfortable. How do you ask where they like to study? Practice writing the question down in your written journal first. Then record yourself asking the question aloud in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

Das Neue Schloss Stuttgart, auch Residenzschloss Stuttgart, ist die ehemalige Residenz der Herzöge und Könige von Württemberg am Schlossplatz in Stuttgart. Die barocke Dreiflügelanlage wurde 1746 begonnen und ist eines der größten Stadtschlösser in Süddeutschland. Heute ist es Sitz des Finanzministeriums, des Wirtschaftsministeriums und von Teilen des Landesmuseums Württemberg. 

The New Palace, also called Residence Palace Stuttgart, is the former residence of the dukes and kings of Württemberg located at the Schlossplatz in Stuttgart. The construction of the Baroque 3-winged building began in 1746 and is one of the largest city palaces in Southern Germany. Today, it is used by the State Ministries of Finance and Economics. Parts of the State Museum of Württemberg are located there as well.

We all have a preferred study place or a place where we feel we can focus on our schoolwork. Let’s look at possible answers to the question: Wo lernst du gern? Or, if someone is asking for a preference from you: Wo lernst du lieber?

Ich lerne lieber in der Bibliothek
als zu Hause.
Ich lerne lieber bei einem Freund
als in einem Café.
Ich lerne gern in einem Park.
 Ich lerne gern bei einer Freundin.
 Ich lerne gern zu Hause.

Wo lernst du gern? In your written journal write down where you like to study or where you prefer to study. Both are valid answers to the question. Challenge yourself and write both kinds of answers.
Now record this in German in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

3) Ich lerne in/bei… am besten.

Where do you have your best study sessions? Read the choices below and choose the one that best fits you and where you like to study best.

Ich lerne am besten in der Bibliothek.

Ich lerne am besten in einem Café.

Ich lerne am besten in einem Park.

Ich lerne am besten bei einem Freund.

Ich lerne am besten bei einer Freundin.

 

Using these sentences as guides, complete the following activity for practice.

Wo lernst du am besten? Where do you have your best study sessions? Maybe it’s one of the places above or maybe it’s some place different. Using the sentences as a model write a sentence that answers the question your your written journal.
Then record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

 

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned to 1) ask someone where they study best for class, 2) say where you prefer to study for class, and 3) say where you best study for class. If you are feeling unsure about any part of the expanded introduction, go back to that section and review.
Now imagine you are telling a German student who is studying abroad in Laramie about some of your favorite study spots in Laramie. How would you tell the person your favorite study places? Record your answer in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.
