5.3 Wann sind deine Kurse?

Servus!

Zum Aufwärmen machen wir unseren Tagesminiplausch und eine Wiederholung.

Wiederholung

In the previous lesson, you learned to ask and understand a specific why-question (Warum lernst du Deutsch?) and how to give some simple reasons for why you study German. Let’s review what you have learned.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Warum lernst du Deutsch? Write a reason down now in your written journal and then read it aloud for your audio journal.

Lektionsüberblick

In this lesson, we will expand on your ability to talk about course load to include asking others how many classes they are taking, when their classes are, and to talk about the days that you have class.

In the end, you will be able to 1) ask someone about their course load, 2) ask someone when they have class, and 3) say on which days you have class.

Was weißt du schon?

Let’s do a quick skills check first before we start.

Noch nicht start klar?

Du kannst immer auf die gleiche 1010-Lektion zurückgreifen!

Not confident about starting this lesson?

You can always review the same Lektion from 1010.

1) Wie viele Kurse hast du?

Asking someone about their course load is a common question. Let’s learn to confidently ask the question (using a question word that you learned in Lektion 4.4, wie viele) and review how to answer by reading and listening to the comic below.

Let’s practice.

Kleiner Hinweis

When talking to a German speaker, one way to ask about course load is to ask how many courses the person has enrolled in. This requires a past tense structure. We will mention it here in case you run across this question.

Für wie viele Kurse hast du dich angemeldet?

Jetzt bist du dran!

You just ran into a classmate from German class. You want to practice your German, so you ask them in German how many classes they are taking this Semester. What do you say? Write this question down in your written journal.
Now record this in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

2) Wann sind deine Kurse?

Let’s keep the conversation going by learning this question.

Let’s practice.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Remember that earlier in the lesson you ran into a classmate from German class. You want to continue your conversation about their classes, so you ask them in German when their classes are. What do you say? Write this question down in your written journal. Now record this in your audio journal.

3) Name your class days

You have a busy schedule and you want to be able to describe your class schedule to someone new. Take a look at the types of responses that you can give.

Kleiner Hinweis

Remember that if you say, Ich habe Kurse am Freitag, you mean you have classes specifically on Friday. Ich habe Kurse freitags, emphasizes the regularity of your classes every Friday. Also note the difference in capitalization.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Wann sind deine Kurse? Answer this question in your written journal.
Now record this in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned to 1) ask someone about their course load, 2) ask someone when they have class, and 3) say on which days you have class. If you are feeling unsure about any part, go back to that section and review.
Now write out a complete dialog between you and the classmate in your German class. Start by asking your classmate how many classes they have and continue from there. Be sure to include die magische Frage, und du?, when needed to keep the conversation going. Then read your dialog aloud with a friend or classmate, if possible.
