In the previous lesson, you learned ways to ask people what their hobbies are or what they like to do. You also learned how to express a preference between two hobbies. Let’s review.

Pretend you have encountered a new classmate or potential friend. Write down a question that you could ask that person to get to know their hobbies. Record yourself asking this question in your audio journal. Remember you have learned a couple of ways to elicit a response about hobbies. Choose the question that comes most naturally to you.

Fährst du vielleicht Snowboard ? Or, maybe you enjoy doing other winter activities. Focus on the phrases that are relevant to you or those you know.

Hallo, ich heiße Emma und komme aus den USA, aus Kalifornien. Ich wohne zurzeit in Laramie. Ich bin Studentin an der Universität von Wyoming und mache gern Sport. Ich bin sehr aktiv und sportlich. Ich spiele Fußball freitags mit meinen Freunden. Samstags spiele ich Tischtennis mit meinem Freund, Heiko. Tischtennis macht uns viel Spaß! Sonntags gehe ich mit meiner besten Freundin wandern, wenn wir Zeit haben.

 

Kleiner Hinweis

If you say, wir treffen uns am Freitag, you mean you are meeting this coming Friday. Wir treffen uns freitags, means you meet every Friday. Also note the difference in capitalization.

Using Emma’s introduction as a guide, create a short paragraph in which you introduce yourself and describe 2-3 activities you do during the week. If you have a friend or loved one that you do the activity with, include that too (e.g. mit meinem Freund, mit meiner Mutter, mit meiner Familie, etc.)
Now record this in German in your audio journal. Rerecord if you are not satisfied.

Some people enjoy playing more than one sport. But sometimes you want to express a preference between two activities. Read the example sentences below and see if you can understand which sport the speaker prefers to play.

 

Ich spiele lieber Basketball als Fußball.
Ich spiele lieber Fußball als amerkanischen Football.
Ich spiele lieber Tischtennis als Tennis.

Let’s practice expressing preferences.

Spielst du lieber Baseball als Volleyball? Spielst du lieber Fußball als amerikanischen Football? Think of two sports that you enjoy playing (or another hobby if sports are not your thing) and write about your preferences, using the modeled language.
Then record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

4) Welchen Sport ich lieber schaue

Some people enjoy watching sports as much as they enjoying playing them. Or, they enjoy watching a sport that they do not play at all! Read the example sentences below and see if you can understand which sport the speaker prefers to watch.

 

Ich schaue lieber Basketball als Fußball.
Ich schaue lieber Fußball als amerkanischen Football.
Ich schaue lieber Basketball als selber zu spielen.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned to 1) name some kinds of sports, 2) ask which sports someone participates in, 3) state which sports you prefer to participate in, and 4) state which sports you prefer to watch. If you are feeling unsure about any part of the expanded introduction, go back to that section and review.
Imagine that you noticed a classmate wearing an NFL jersey of one of your favorite teams (NFL = National Football League). You love watching NFL games on Sundays and decide to strike up a conversation. Consider these questions 1) How would you explain to this new friend that you like to watch American football on Sundays? 2) How would you explain to this person that you prefer American football to soccer? 3) This classmate is clearly pretty sporty. How would you ask them which sports they play? Write the answers to these questions in your written journal. Then record your answers in your audio journal.
