4.12 Wie lange machst du das schon?

Hallo alle zusammen!

Zum Aufwärmen machen wir unseren Tagesminiplausch und eine Wiederholung.

Wiederholung

In the previous lesson, you learned how to ask others about their talents and abilities and how to talk about your own best talents. Let’s review what you have learned.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was kannst du gut machen? Was kannst du besser machen? Was kannst du am besten machen? Compare three of your talents and rank them, using the word kann and the language modeled above and in the previous lesson. Write this sentence(s) down in your written journal.

Lektionsüberblick

In this lesson you will learn how to ask a new question to engage others in conversation. You will also learn how to give reasons behind your love of a certain activity or hobby. In the end, you will be able to ask and respond to the questions 1) how long you have had your hobby and 2) what you like about your hobby.

Was weißt du schon?

Before we begin let’s do a quick skills check.

Noch nicht start klar?

Du kannst immer auf die gleiche 1010-Lektion zurückgreifen!

Not confident about starting this lesson?

You can always review the same Lektion from 1010.

1) Wie lange machst du das schon?

You might recall the question phrase “Wie lange” from earlier lessons (e.g. Wie lange kennst du dein Lieblingsmensch?). Listen to the questions below and the answers that follow in the comic. Can you tell what is being asked?

Let’s practice.

Before moving on take a moment to say each of the questions and answers aloud from the previous activity and answer the question below.

Jetzt bist du dran!

In your written journal, write down a short dialogue using the questions above. Then record it in your audio journal.

2) Was gefällt dir an deinem Hobby?

Have you ever considered why you enjoy your hobby so much? In other words…

Warum [machst] du [dein Hobby]?
Was gefällt dir an..[schwimmen, tanzen, singen, etc.]?

You might remember that you have learned a word that helps you to give a reason: weil. (e.g. Ich bin müde, weil ich spät ins Bett gehe.). Now let’s focus on giving reasons we enjoy our hobby using weil.

Ich stricke, weil ich gern kreativ bin.
Ich spiele Basketball, weil ich gern aktiv bin.
Ich treibe gern Sport, weil ich gern mit meinen Freunden spiele.

Let’s practice building sentences.

Remember: You can ask the question back with “Und du?

Jetzt bist du dran!

Warum machst du dein Hobby? You have seen a few ways modeled above to answer this question. Think about your number one hobby and find a simple reason to describe why you enjoy it, using the word weil (because) .
Remember, even in your second semester of learning German, it is not yet important to be precise. Resist the temptation to think of your answer in English and try to translate it into German. Instead, focus on using the German you know and use the modeled language above and from past lessons (e.g. 3.1 and 3.2, characteristics)
Then record yourself  in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned to ask and answer 1) how long you have had your hobby and 2) what you like about your hobby. If you are feeling unsure about any part of the expanded introduction, go back to that section and review.
Now imagine you are on your study abroad to a German-speaking country and a new acquaintance, who you hope will become your friend, spots you doing one of your hobbies in a park. The person asks, Wie lange machst du das schon? How will you respond? Can you think of how you might continue the conversation?
In your written journal, write out a dialogue between you and this acquaintance about your hobbies beginning with the prompt and using the language modeled in this lesson and in previous lessons.
Then record yourself in your audio journal. As always, you can meet with a classmate and write and record together!

*As you conclude this lesson, don’t forget to check Canvas!*
