3.6 Der Körper

Hallo alle zusammen!

Zum Aufwärmen machen wir unseren Tagesminiplausch und eine Wiederholung.

Wiederholung

In the previous lesson you learned to express the intensity of a feeling and how to build sentences using wenn. Let’s review.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Wie geht’s? Wann/warum geht es dir so? In your written journal, answer the question wie geht’s and briefly and simply explain your answer, using the comic as a model.

Lektionsüberblick

Now we will shift our focus to physical descriptions. In 1010, you learned how to talk about your body. Now, we will work on being able to talk about someone else’s body.

Although, from a language point of view, physical descriptions are completely neutral (for example, there is nothing inherently good or bad about being fat or thin), we live in a world where value is placed on certain kinds of bodies. These lessons will encourage you to find other ways to describe a person without commenting on their body size, such as by describing the person’s hair or clothing.

For this lesson, the focus will be on adding to your existing vocabulary of body parts and talking about numbers. In the end, you will be able to 1) name a number of body parts and 2) talk about how many of each someone has.

Was weißt du schon?

Recall these body parts from GERM 1010 before moving on to the lesson.

Noch nicht start klar?

Du kannst immer auf die gleiche 1010-Lektion zurückgreifen!

Not confident about starting this lesson?

You can always review the same Lektion from 1010.

1) Noch mehr Körperteile

Let’s review and learn mehr Körperteile along with their plural forms with these interactive slides.

Now let’s practice. Drag the German vocabulary words to the corresponding images.

You can check out Deutsche Welle for extra practice with Körperteile.

Jetzt bist du dran!

In your written journal, play a memory game with yourself and jot down any body parts that you can remember. Recall any plurals too. Then check your work.

2) Körperteile zählen

Knowing the plural forms is important if we want to count things. Try the activity below.

Now let’s practice building sentences.

Jetzt bist du dran!

In your written journal, write the sentences from the activity above.
Then record yourself saying the sentences aloud. You might need to practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned how to 1) name a number of body parts and 2) talk about how many of each someone has. If you are feeling unsure about any part of today’s lesson, go back to that section and review.

Imagine we have invented a way to speak to aliens – but we can’t see them. They seem to have the same kinds body parts we have, but not necessarily the same number. Listen to the alien’s description of itself first and draw what you hear. Then read the text and confirm.

Hallo Erdling! Also habe ich vierunddreißig Finger! Ich habe zwei Beine (also auch zwei Knie) und vier Füße (zwei Füße an jedem Bein).

Now it’s your turn to describe yourself to the alien. Model your description on the aliens’ description (you will not need all the parenthetical asides!). Then record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

For more practice: meet up with a classmate or communicate online and take turns playing the alien and coming up with different kinds of bodies!
