Wiederholung

In the previous lesson, you learned how to discuss online hobbies, how to ask others about their favorite hobby, and how to express your own. Let’s review what you have learned.

Jetzt bist du dran!

As a review, can you recall the difference between the word needed to express a preference between two things and the words needed to express a favorite thing? Look back through your recent notes in your written journal.

Lektionsüberblick

Let’s continue building our vocabulary of hobbies. Remember that the goal is not to memorize each and every one but to pinpoint the hobbies that are relevant to you and your life. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to 1) name some other hobbies and free time activities, 2) ask what someone’s favorite free time activities are, and 3) state which other hobbies and free time activities you like the best.

Was weißt du schon?

Let’s start by accessing your existing skills. See the link to the first book below if you decide you’d like to revisit the material there before starting today.

Not confident about starting this lesson?

You can always review the same Lektion from 1010.

1) andere Hobbys und sonstige Freizeitaktivitäten

Not everyone plays sports or spends a great deal of time online. Let’s explore some low-tech hobbies.

Let’s practice building sentences with these activities.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Liest du Bücher? Schreibst du Kurzgeschichten? Which free time activities do you do? Look above at the slides and write down in your written journal any of the activities that you do.

Then listen to the accompanying recording for that activity and practice saying the activity aloud in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Rerecord until you are satisfied.

2) Was machst du am liebsten? Was sind deine Lieblingsfreizeitaktivitäten?

Let’s look at two questions that we can use to learn about another’s favorite activities. You will recognize many parts of each question. Read and listen.

Let’s practice these questions.

Jetzt bist du dran!

In your written journal write down the questions that you just learned.
Then record yourself saying the question aloud in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

3) Was ich am liebsten mache…

Read and listen to Yasmin, Max, Johannes, and Julia talk about their hobbies. Was machen sie am liebsten? Then complete the activities that follow.

Jasmin Max Johannes Julia
Was macht Johannes gern? Und Julia, Yasmin und Max? (Drag the hobbies to the appropriate box.)

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was machst du am liebsten? We have learned about many hobbies – creative hobbies, musical hobbies, athletic hobbies, religious or family-oriented hobbies. Using Johannes, Julia, Yasmin, or Max’s introduction as a guide, describe the activities you do in your free time. For a challenge, use gern or am liebsten to indicate a preference.
Then record in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned  to 1) name some other hobbies and free time activities, 2) ask what someone’s favorite free time activities are, and 3) state which other hobbies and free time activities you like the best. If you are feeling unsure about any part, please go back to that section and review.
Now choose a character from above and pretend you are having a conversation with them. Write a dialog in which you ask Johannes, Julia, Yasmin, or Max what their favorite free time activity is. How do they respond? How do they ask you a similar question? How do you respond? After you write the dialog, read it aloud playing both parts or, better yet, find a friend, classmate, or family member who would have fun reading some German with you! Be sure to record this in your audio journal. Rerecord until you are satisfied with your final product.
