3.5 Ich bin müde, wenn…

Zum Aufwärmen machen wir unseren Tagesminiplausch und eine Wiederholung.

In the previous lesson you learned how to make statements about your feelings and give reasons. You also learned how to ask why. Let’s review.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Wie fühlst du dich heute? How do you feel today? Write a statement, using one of the feeling words you have recently learned. Remember to be in your German mind! That means, you will answer with Ich bin… Record it in your audio journal as well.

Lektionsüberblick

Now that we can make a few simple statements about why we feel a certain way, we will work on being able to say under which conditions we feel that way. In the end, you will be able to 1) make a few statements about to what degree you feel your feeling, 2) make a few statements about the conditions, under which you feel that way, and 3) ask “when?“.

1) sehr/ziemlich/ein bisschen/gar nicht

Consider the adjective de. You’ve learned that you can place the word nicht in front of the adjective or characteristic to indicate the opposite of that adjective.

You also remember how to say that you are very tired, somewhat/a little tired and not tired at all. If you want a reminder, look at the pictures and text.

 

Ich bin sehr müde. Ich bin ein bisschende/etwas müde. Ich bin gar nicht müde.

We can now add ziemlich to the intensity scale.

Ich bin sehr müde.
Ich bin ziemlich müde.
Ich bin müde.
Ich bin ein bißchen müde.
Ich bin nicht müde.
Ich bin gar nicht müde.

You can use these words (nicht, gar nicht, etwas, ein bisschen, and sehr) to add levels of intensity to any adjective. Let’s try it out.

Wie geht’s? Answer the question with nuance! Are you pretty happy? or a little bit sad? Now you can say it!
Then record yourself saying answering this question aloud.

2) Ich bin müde, wenn…

Wann bist du müde? Wann bist du nicht müde? Read and listen to some possible combinations.

Ich bin müde, wenn ich nicht viel schlafe.
Ich bin sehr müde, wenn ich viel Sport mache.
Ich bin gar nicht müde, wenn ich viel schlafe.

Let’s practice some more.

 

 

Jetzt bist du dran!

Wann bist du nervös? Wann bist du müde? Using the sentences above as models, answer at least one of the two questions in your written journal.
Then record yourself! You might need to practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

3) Wann?

Let’s do a quick review of some question words you have learned so far. You will see a new word in the mix, as well. See how you  do.

Now listen to the questions in the recording and repeat after them. Most of them should feel very comfortable by now. If not, be sure to listen and repeat.


 

Jetzt bist du dran!

Listen to the questions in the recording again and write down your answers to all of the questions in your journal.
Then record yourself asking and answering the questions. Or, better yet, meet up with a classmate and record together! Be sure to say the words as you hear them! (E.g. Wann = vahn). You might need to practice saying it a couple times before recording.

Zum Schluß

Think about all of the feelings we have been talking about in the last few lessons. Choose a couple and write out how often and to which degree you feel that feeling, and then state why. Use Sofia’s example sentences as a model:
Ich bin oft ziemlich glücklich, weil ich viel schlafe.
Ich bin manchmal etwas nervös, wenn ich einen Test habe.
— Be sure to stick with the model!  Stay in your German frame of mind, and avoid translating your thoughts directly from English.–
When you are ready, record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying what you’ve learned a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.
