3.1 Die Eigenschaften meiner Familie

Hallo alle zusammen!

Zum Aufwärmen machen wir unseren Tagesminiplausch und eine Wiederholung.

Wiederholung

In our last unit, we talked about our families, relationships, and where we are from. What do you remember? Do a quick review before moving on to today’s lesson.

Lektionsüberblick

In this lesson, you will expand your ability to talk about the characteristics (Eigenschaften) in your family. In the end, you will be able to 1) state which characteristics describe your family members and 2) talk about what kind of people your family members are.

1) Die Eigenschaften meiner Familie

Let’s learn to describe our family members. Remember that there are many cognates that exist to help you with your vocabulary. Recall some of those with this activity.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Wie ist deine Mutter? Wie ist dein Vater? What primary characteristics would you use to describe your parents? You siblings? Your grandparents? In your written journal, record statements about your favorite family members, naming their primary characteristics. For example, Meine Mutter ist intelligent, kreativ und lustig. Mein Vater ist introvertiert, clever und stur.
When you are done, practice saying these sentences about your family members aloud until they flow. Then record yourself in your audio journal.

2) Eine intelligente Frau, ein lustiger Mann

Let’s continue to describe members of our family, but in a slightly different way. See if you can spot the difference between the sentences on the left and the ones on the right.

Meine Mutter ist intelligent. Meine Mutter ist eine intelligente Frau.
Meine Schwester ist sportlich. Meine Schwester ist eine sportliche Person.
Mein Vater ist lustig. Mein Vater ist ein lustiger Mann.
Mein Bruder ist sympatisch. Mein Bruder ist ein sympatischer Mensch.

What do you notice? Let’s break it down.

Kleiner Hinweis

The word Mensch can simply mean person in German. However, it can have a deeper meaning in that it can refer to a person of upstanding character or a genuinely good person. So, for example, if you hear: Mein Bruder is ein guter Mensch, you can infer that the person speaking thinks well of their brother.

Some additional resources you can check out to find characteristics that are relevant to you.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned how to 1) state which characteristics describe your family members and 2) talk about what kind of people your family members are. If you are feeling unsure about any part of today’s lesson, go back to that section and review.
Take your previous statements about your family and rewrite them with the new structure. For example, here are Julia’s previous statements about her parents and her revised statements:
Meine Mutter ist intelligent, kreativ und lustig. Meine Mutter ist eine intelligente Frau.
Meine Mutter ist eine kreative Person.
Meine Mutter ist ein lustiger Mensch.
Mein Vater ist introvertiert, clever und stur. Mein Vater ist eine introvertierte Person.
Mein Vater ist ein cleverer Mann.
Mein Vater ist ein sturer Mensch.

Use Julia’s sentences as your model to talk about your favorite family members.

When you are done, practice saying these sentences about your family members aloud until they flow. Then record yourself in your audio journal.
