Was hast du schon? Was hast du nicht? Find a recipe here. In your written journal, write down what you have (Ich habe…) and what you do not have (Ich habe kein(e/n)…) .

1) der Wochenmarkt und die Spezialgeschäfte (the market and specialty shops)
German-speaking countries are fairly well-known for having robust year-round farmers’ markets (Wochenmärkte ) that often take place twice weekly and a variety of specialty shops for some of the different food groups (Metzgerei = butcher, Bäckeri = backery ). Although social trends move away from a full-time stay-at-home parent and the younger generations appreciate the efficiency of being able to buy all of their groceries in one location, im Supermarkt, shopping outside of the Supermarkt is still very popular. This is even more true, if you want to buy foods that are grown/raised/produced locally.
Let’s look at some of the words and phrases you may need to talk about grocery shopping at the Wochenmarkt followed by Spezialgeschäften.

2) Auf dem Wochenmarkt einkaufen
Whether you are shopping at the Wochenmarkt or at one of the specialty stores, there are certain questions and phrases we can expect to hear. This means that we can be prepared with our phrases, ensuring a successful transaction.
Look at the interaction in the comic between the farmer and his customer. Listen to their conversation and read along. Even if you do not understand individual words, do you have a general idea what the farmer is asking and saying?
Let’s work with the language!

3) Wo ich Lebensmittel kaufe (where I go grocery shopping)
Sofia Müller likes to shop local. Listen to and read along with her statement on where she goes grocery shopping.
Ich kaufe Obst und Gemüse auf dem Wochenmarkt.
Ich kaufe frische Brötchen und Kuchen beim Bäcker / in der Bäckerei.
Ich kaufe Goudakäse und Ziegenfrischkäse in der Käserei.
Ich kaufe Wurst beim Metzger / in der Metzgerei.
Ich kaufe Getränke und Backzutaten (baking ingredients) im Supermarkt.
Jetzt bist du dran!
