5.7 Wie kommst du zur Uni?

Guten Morgen!

Zum Aufwärmen machen wir unseren Tagesminiplausch und eine Wiederholung.

Wiederholung

In the previous lesson, you learned to say the places you like to study and how to pose that question to others. Let’s review what you have learned.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Wo lernst du gern? How would you answer? You can be creative here and respond by saying that you like studying at the library the best or that you prefer one location over another. Or, keep it simple. Now that your language is expanding, you will notice that you have more choices. This can feel empowering or a little overwhelming at times. That is a part of the language journey!

Lektionsüberblick

Let’s talk about logistics – how you get to and from school and how you prefer to travel back and forth. In the end, you will be able to 1) ask someone how they get to class, 2) say how you prefer to travel to class, 3) describe some transportation vehicles you own, and 4) understand directions.

Was weißt du schon?

Let’s start with our skills check.

Noch nicht start klar?

Du kannst immer auf die gleiche 1010-Lektion zurückgreifen!

Not confident about starting this lesson?

You can always review the same Lektion from 1010.

1) Wie kommst du zur Uni?

Let’s learn to ask a classmate or friend how they get to the university (or to their high school, favorite study spot, etc.)?

Let’s practice.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Pretend you just ran into a classmate walking to German class, and you want to practice your German. How would you ask them how they get to the university?
Record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

2) Preferred methods of transportation

Wouldn’t it be great if someone could drop us off at the door to our classroom building each day? That is usually not the case, so how do we get to class? More importantly, how to we prefer to get to class? Let’s practice with the word lieber again to discuss preference.

Ich fahre lieber mit dem Roller als mit dem Bus.

Ich gehe lieber zu Fuß als mit dem Auto.
Ich fahre am liebsten mit dem Fahrrad.

Now let’s practice.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Und du? Wie kommst du lieber zur Uni? Write your answer in your written journal.
Then record your answer in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

3) Meine Fahrzeuge

Take a look at the Fahrzeuge below. What do you notice about the descriptors in front of each vehicle?

Let’s practice describing our vehicles.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was hast du? What do you have? Ein altes Auto? Ein teures Fahrrad? In your written journal, list and describe the vehicles that you own.
Now record this in German in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

4) Mein Weg zur Uni

Some people are good with giving and following directions to new places. Others might find this challenging in any language. But knowing the basic words and phrases is the first step to understanding.

With that in mind, read and listen to these flashcards. See if you can understand their meaning based on the images. Flip the card over if needed to see a translation.

Let’s practice some more with this activity

Listen as Kate describes how she gets from her house to the university.

Ich wohne in einem Haus in der Nähe von der Uni. Ich komme aus meinem Haus und biege nach rechts ab.  Ich gehe die Flint Straße entlang. Ich biege nach links in die Zwölfte Straße und die Uni ist direkt vor mir.

Let’s Practice.

Now let’s try something a bit harder.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Listen to a student named Sebi describe how he gets to the university. You won’t understand everything, but you will pick up many words and phrases having to do with directions. Listen to the audio here and jot down any words and phrases that you understand:

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned to 1) ask someone how they get to class, 2) say how you prefer to travel to class, 3) describe some transportation vehicles you own, and 4) understand directions. If you are feeling unsure about any part of the expanded introduction, go back to that section and review.
Now let’s put it all together. Imagine you run into an exchange student from a German-speaking country on campus and you start getting to know each other. In addition to introducing yourselves and stating where you live, you eventually start talking about your daily lives, including how you get to class. In your written journal, write out a dialogue between you and the student, including the introductions. Use the modeled language in this lesson and previous lessons.
When you are done, check your work. Then practice and record your dialogue. You may also meet up with a classmate and record together.
