4.5 Spaß mit meinen Freunden – Was machen wir?

Hallo allerseits!

Zum Aufwärmen machen wir unseren Tagesminiplausch und eine Wiederholung.

Wiederholung

In the previous lesson, you learned to say how you know your friends at UW, to ask someone how they know their friends, and how often they hang out with their friends. Let’s review.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Imagine that you are home from college for the Thanksgiving holiday and your family can suddenly speak German. What questions might your loved ones ask to find out about your friends at UW? Write those questions down in your written journal now. Then write down responses. Remember to focus on the questions and responses that have been modeled in this book. This will help you to get the structures down pat.

As you can see from the chart, hanging out with friends (soziale Kontakte knüpfen/pflegen = making and maintaining social contacts) is a number one priority for today’s youth. When you want to make plans with friends, you have to decide, what you are going to do, when you are going to do it, and where you will meet. The next two lessons will prepare to make plans for fun. In this lesson, we will discuss how to convey the enjoyment of hanging out with friends and we will look at kinds of typical activities. In the end, you will be able to 1) talk about having fun, 2) ask your friends what they want to do, 3) talk about going out, and 4) talk about staying in.

Was weißt du schon?

Let’s see what activities and phrases you already know. Then you can decide if you need to review by going back to the lesson from Deutsch im Alltag I.

Noch nicht start klar?

Du kannst immer auf die gleiche 1010-Lektion zurückgreifen!

Not confident about starting this lesson?

You can always review the same Lektion from 1010.

1) Reden über Spaß

You might remember Spaß haben and Spaß machen from 1010. Now we will focus on expressing our enjoyment of an activity by using gern. You’ve worked with gern before, so you might remember its placement in a sentence. Read the sentences below and then complete the practice activities.

Netflix-Schauen macht mir Spaß.
Ich habe Spaß beim Netflix-Schauen.

Netflix-Schauen macht uns Spaß.
Wir haben Spaß beim Netflix-Schauen.

Ich sehe gern Netflix.

Wir sehen gern Netflix.

Konzerte machen mir Spaß.
Ich habe Spaß beim Konzert.

Konzerte machen uns Spaß.
Wir haben Spaß beim Konzert.

Ich gehe gern ins Konzert.

Wir gehen gern ins Konzert.

Tanzen macht mir Spaß.
Ich habe Spaß beim Tanzen.

Tanzen macht uns Spaß.
Wir haben Spaß beim Tanzen.

Ich gehe gern tanzen.

Wir gehen gern tanzen.

Let’s practice. Be sure to click through to each question.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was macht dir Spaß? Was machst du gern? These questions are both designed to prompt you to say what you like to do or what is fun for you. Think of times with friends and the activities you like to do together. In your written journal, write down complete sentences that describe what you (or you and your friends – wir) like to do together.

2) Was wollen wir machen?

How do you get the ball rolling on making plans with friends? You ask:

Was wollen wir machen? Listen and repeat:

3) Ich will ausgehen.

If you are extrovertiert, you might enjoy going out. What activities do you want to do when you feel like going out?

Ich will in die Kneipe gehen.
Ich will ins Kino gehen.
Ich will ins Konzert gehen.
Ich will tanzen gehen. Couple dancing

Kleiner Hinweis

The word “will” in German is a false friend. A false friend is a word that looks like an English word, but the meaning is different. In German, Ich will… means, I want.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Reading and seeing authentic German texts is important to understanding language and culture. You can check out this event website to find real-life events happening in Germany. What words do you recognize? Do the pictures give clues? How about the use of English for certain events? After you have spent a few minutes looking at the events, in your written journal answer the following question: Was willst du machen? What would like to do? Write down 2-3 events that you see listed and would like to do.

4) Ich will daheim bleiben.

Read the comic below. What does the puppet want to do?

Let’s practice stay-at-home activities.

Jetzt bist du dran!

Imagine that your friend or partner wants to go out, but you want to stay at home. What is the sentence that expresses that? Write that in your journal now. Next imagine that you are telling your friend or partner what it is that you want to do at home (Ich will…). Record your “wants” in your audio journal.

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned how to 1) talk about having fun, 2) ask your friends what they want to do, 3) talk about going out, and 4) talk about staying in. If you are feeling unsure about any part, go back to that section and review.
Was machst du gern? Answer the question in your written journal by reviewing all of the activities in this lesson and noting which ones you enjoy doing. Use the language modeled in #1.
Let’s put it the rest together. Was willst du heute Abend machen? Think about how your tendencies and describe whether you generally want to stay in or go out and what activities you want to do when you are in your ideal place (home or away). Write these thoughts in complete sentences, using the models you have seen in this lesson. Then record your answers in your audio journal.
