In the previous lesson you learned how to describe family members, note similarities, and describe people in art. Let’s review.

Wie siehst du aus? Do you look like someone in your family? Or, maybe you share a resemblance with your friend. In your written journal write a sentence noting a similarity between you and this person. Then practice saying it aloud and record the sentence once you feel confident.

Whether you consider yourself a fashionista or don’t give much thought to what you wear, at some point you will need to talk about your clothes or the clothing of others. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to 1) ask what someone is wearing, 2) name some items of clothing, 3) say what items of clothing you are wearing today, and 4) say what items of clothing another person is wearing today.

Was trägst du heute? Answer the question in your written journal stating what you are wearing today using the modeled language above. Then record your answer in your audio journal.

Let’s review and build vocabulary with the following activity.

 

Kleiner Hinweis

Remember the power of the compound word (Komposita) in German. You can use this feature of German to build more specific pieces of clothing using what you already know. Look at the example below.
Regen + Jacke = die Regenjacke (rain jacket)
Haus + Schuhe = die Hausschuhe (house shoes)
Hand + Schuhe = die Handschuhe (gloves)
Schnee + Stiefel = die Schneestiefel (snow boots)
Training + Hose = die Traininghose (athletic shorts)

 

Now listen as the speaker describes what Kleidungsstücke she has in her closet. What Kleidungsstücke can you understand?

Kleiner Hinweis

Do you remember that you can say both “Es geht mir gut” and “Mir geht es gut“?
German is pretty cool. You can start a sentence with almost any part of a sentence and then just follow it up with the verb and the subject!
That means that you can also say “Ich trage einen Pullover heute” und “Heute trage ich einen Pullover“.
Starting a sentence with anything other than the subject emphasizes that thing. And the best part? No need to add a comma!

 

Let’s practice this word order.

 

Jetzt bist du dran!

Was trägst du heute? What are you wearing today? Ein T-Shirt? Eine Brille? In your written journal, write what you are wearing. Experiment with adding colors. (e.g. Ich trage ein blaues T-Shirt).
Then record yourself saying the sentence aloud. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording it again.

4) Heute trägt er/sie/xier…

Read the comic below and then answer the questions that follow.

Was trägt dein Klassenkamerad heute? Look around or speculate about what a classmate (or person you know) is wearing today. Using what you learned above, create a sentence to express that.
Then record yourself saying the sentence aloud! You might need to practice saying it a couple times before recording.

 

Österreich im Blickpunkt: Der Mariä-Empfängnis-Dom

Der Mariä-Empfängnis-Dom in Linz wurde zwischen 1862-1935 gebaut. Er ist ein neugotischer, römisch-katholischer Dom, der auch Mariendom und Neuer Dom genannt wird. Der Mariendom ist die größte (nach Fassungsvermögen) und die zweithöchste Kirche Österreichs. (Der Stephansdom in Wien ist 2 Meter höher.)

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is a neo-Gothic, Roman Catholic cathedral that is also called the New Cathedral. The Mariendom is the largest (by holding capacity) and second tallest church in Austria. (St. Stephan’s Cathedral in Vienna is 2 meter higher.)

 

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned how to 1) ask what someone is wearing, 2) name some items of clothing, 3) say what items of clothing you are wearing today, and 4) say what items of clothing another person is wearing today. If you are feeling unsure about any part of today’s lesson, go back to that section and review.
Then record yourself in your audio journal asking someone what they are wearing today. Then provide a verbal answer as well. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying what you’ve learned a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.
