Now we will shift our focus to physical descriptions. In 1010, you learned how to talk about your body. Now, we will work on being able to talk about someone else’s body.
Although, from a language point of view, physical descriptions are completely neutral (for example, there is nothing inherently good or bad about being fat or thin), we live in a world where value is placed on certain kinds of bodies. These lessons will encourage you to find other ways to describe a person without commenting on their body size, such as by describing the person’s hair or clothing.
For this lesson, the focus will be on adding to your existing vocabulary of body parts and talking about numbers. In the end, you will be able to 1) name a number of body parts and 2) talk about how many of each someone has.

Österreich im Blickpunkt: Eine Köpfung im Dom (A beheading in the cathedral)
crowning ist eine Marienskulptur der österreichischen Performance- und Sprachkünstlerin Esther Strauß. Sie wurde für eine Ausstellung im Juni/Juli 2024 im Kunstraum des Mariä-Empfängnis-Doms in Linz entwickelt. Die Skulptur stellt eine natürliche Geburt Jesu dar. Die Installation wurde kontrovers diskutiert; konservative Katholiken forderten ihre Entfernung aus dem Dom. Eine unbekannte Person zerstörte das Kunstwerk wenige Tage nach seiner Aufstellung. Die etwa 30 cm große Skulptur aus Lindenholz wurde von der Bildhauerin Theresa Limberger geschnitzt und bemalt und von der Künstlerin und Restauratorin Klara Kohler patiniert.
crowning is a sculpture of the Virgin Mary by the Austrian performance artist and writer Esther Strauß. It was developed for an exhibition in the art room of the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Linz in June/July 2024. The sculpture depicts the natural birth of Jesus. The installation was controversial; conservative Catholics demanded its removal from the cathedral. An unknown person destroyed the artwork shortly after the exhibit opened. The sculpture is approximately 12 inches tall and is made of linden wood. It was carved and painted by sculptress Theresa Limberger and patinated by the artist and conservator Klara Kohler.

Imagine we have invented a way to speak to aliens – but we can’t see them. They seem to have the same kinds body parts we have, but not necessarily the same number. Listen to the alien’s description of itself first and draw what you hear. Then read the text and confirm.
Hallo Erdling! Ich habe zwei Köpfe und in jedem Gesicht habe ich ein Auge, zwei Nasen, zwei Münder (einen mit Lippen und einen ohne Lippen), und drei Ohren (also habe ich zwei Augen, vier Nasen, vier Münder, und sechs Ohren). Ich habe natürlich drei Hälse (einen für jeden Kopf) und eine Brust, einen Bauch und einen Rücken. Ich habe vier Arme, also habe ich vier Schulter und vier Ellenbogen. Aber ich habe acht Hände (zwei an jedem Arm) und sechs Finger jeweils an zwei Händen, fünf Finger jeweils an zwei Händen und drei Finger jeweils an vier Händen. Also habe ich vierunddreißig Finger! Ich habe zwei Beine (also auch zwei Knie) und vier Füße (zwei Füße an jedem Bein).
Now it’s your turn to describe yourself to the alien. Model your description on the aliens’ description (you will not need all the parenthetical asides!). Then record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.
For more practice: meet up with a classmate or communicate online and take turns playing the alien and coming up with different kinds of bodies!
