Lektionsüberblick

This lesson is all about “must-dos”. What do you have to do each day? Or, what must you do each day? German has just one word for those two ideas: müssen. We will look at how to use this word in this lesson. In the end, you will be able to 1) say what things you have to do, 2) say whether you have to work during your studies (and what kind of work you have), and 3) say when you have to do things.

1) Was ich machen muss

In Deutsch im Alltag I, we looked at a list of things that we have to do each day. Now we are going to turn those into complete sentences. First, read the list and then see how the sentences are built.

Ich muss pünktlich aufstehen.

Ich muss mich anziehen.

Ich muss morgens frühstücken.

Ich muss pünktlich an die Uni gehen.

Ich muss zu Mittag essen.

Ich muss nach Hause gehen.

Ich muss lernen.

Ich muss zu Abend essen.

Ich muss ins Bett gehen.

What do you notice about the word order? How is it different than English?

Was musst du täglich machen? What do you have to do each day? In your written journal, write in complete sentences some tasks that you must do. Use the sentences above as models.
Now record this in German in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied.

2) Arbeiten müssen

It’s common for many students to have to work while going to school. Read and listen to the question. How does each person respond? Do they have to work while going to school?

Let’s work on formulating a complete sentence as a response. Notice the word order again.

Ich muss während des Studiums arbeiten.

Ich muss nicht während des Studiums arbeiten.

Let’s practice.

The characters in the comic are lucky. Sie müssen nicht während des Studiums arbeiten. But here are some ways you can respond if you do work during school.

Ich arbeite bei [name of company or store].
Ich habe einen Teilzeitjob bei [name of company or store].
Ich habe einen Ferienjob bei [name of company or store]
Ich mache ein Praktikum bei [name of company or store].

Kleiner Hinweis

To help with formulating these responses, here are a few definitions.

der Teilzeitjob = the part-time job
der Ferienjob = the seasonal job/summer job
das Praktikum = the internship

3) Wann ich alles machen muss

Of all the things you have to do each day, which of the things must you do at a certain time? Read, listen, and repeat the example sentences below.

 

Ich muss um 7hr aufstehen.
Ich muss um halb neun an die Uni gehen.
Ich muss um sechs Uhr abends zur Arbeit gehen.
Ich muss um halb elf ins Bett gehen.

image Die Swarovski Kristallwelten sind eine von André Heller im Auftrag des Kristallglasherstellers Swarovski konzipierte eine Erlebniswelt, bestehend aus Park, Kunstmuseum, Verkauf und Restaurant. Sie wurden im Jahr 1995 eröffnet und befinden sich im nahe Innsbruck gelegenen Wattens in Tirol, dem Hauptsitz und Gründungsort des Unternehmens. In den 18 unterirdischen Wunderkammern wird das Material Kristall von Künstlern, Designern und Architekten wie Brian Eno, Tord Boontje, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jim Whiting, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí oder Yayoi Kusama auf verschiedene Art und Weise interpretiert und dargestellt. Rechts ist die Wunderkammer “El Sol”. In dieser Installation von Fernando Romero wird die Beziehung des Menschen zur Sonne erforscht.

The Swarovski Kristallwelten (Crystal Worlds) is an experience attraction created by André Heller for the crystal glass manufacturer Swarovski, consisting of a park, art museum, retail area, and restaurant. It opened in 1995 and is located near Innsbruck in Wattens in Tyrol, where the company was founded and has its headquarters. In 18 underground chambers of wonder, crystal has been interpreted and represented in a variety of ways by artists, designers, and architects like Brian Eno, Tord Boontje, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jim Whiting, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí oder Yayoi Kusama. To the right is the chamber of wonder “El Sol”. In this installation by Fernando Romero, the relationship between man and the sun is explored.

 

Zum Schluß

In this lesson, you learned to 1) say what things you have to do, 2) say whether you have to work during your studies (and what kind of work you have), and 3) say when you have to do things. If you are feeling unsure about any part of the expanded introduction, go back to that section and review.
Imagine you are at a café with a new friend on your study abroad to a German-speaking country and your friend says: “Was musst du heute machen?” Write out your response and then keep the conversation going. Be sure to use this language modeled in this lesson and in previous lessons. When you are done writing, check your spelling and structures. Then record yourself in your audio journal. If you can do it immediately without reading, that’s great! Otherwise, practice saying it a couple times before recording. Or rerecord, if you are not satisfied. As always, you can meet with a classmate and record together.
